Aces Update: Diamonds in the rough

Amidst some early-season struggles, the Las Vegas Aces look to push through the rocky road to get back on top.

It has been an eventful first three weeks of the 2024 WNBA season, and the Las Vegas Aces have played their part in the madness.

The Aces, who we’ve all become so accustomed to seeing in what seems to be an almost permanent championship stride, aren’t looking like the team they’re known to be. After some on-court shortcomings, a fan favorite getting waived from the roster and a slow jog out of the season’s gates, what is next for Vegas?

Life isn’t Fair

In an unexpected move, the Aces waived Dyaisha Fair, the No. 16 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft and the No. 3 all-time scorer in NCAA women’s basketball history. It was a stunner that angered fans, and even had some questioning the team. Fair only touched the hardwood once for the franchise for a total of four minutes, leaving many to believe she didn’t get a true shot to establish a role with the team, especially considering her impressive college career.

Fair likely will get opportunities elsewhere, but it is still a tough pill for many Vegas fans to swallow, especially with her sample size with the squad being so tiny. However, the Aces using that extra roster spot to convince Tiffany Hayes to come out of retirement and join the team should, at least somewhat, satisfy the Vegas faithful.

In the Gray

The Aces have had a rocky start to this season, and the absence of Chelsea Gray is a significant reason why. Gray injects this Aces team with energy, leadership, toughness and championship pedigree. While the Aces are 4-2, there has only been one victory that felt like a polished win. There have been a lot of defensive shortcomings, playing from behind and the inability to create the separation on the scoreboard that we are used to seeing from Vegas. A win is a win, but the essence of domination seems vacant from the team known to be the best.

Yet, as it only has been six games and Gray eventually will return, I expect the tables to turn sooner than later, and for the Aces to hop back into their dominating, championship stride.

Bouncing back with optimism

While the early portion of this season has been a little draining, there is still plenty to look forward to. Honestly, it’s better to have the hardships come now versus in September when locking in for playoff basketball. For now, A’ja is playing at the M’VP level (as usual) and, in addition to being named WNBA Western Conference Player of the Month for May, seems poised to add more trophies to her cache, the Point Gawd should be back soon, the roster looks good and at the end of the day, the team is two games above .500 and has the second-best record in the Western Conference. This season is still living up to the Aces’ standard.
