The 2023 death of Dick Smothers reminded longtime motorsports fans of the short-lived Smothers Brothers Drag Racing Team. The 12-second Super Stock/Stick Oldsmobile that brother Tom personally drove to near-record times at the 1968 NHRA Nationals was joined by the matching Olds Stockers of veterans Pete Kost, Ron Garey and Jim Waibel, plus the Top Fuelers of Don Garlits and Jim Busby. Within months of this April 1969 cover story, however, the promising program prematurely dissolved because another program got canceled: the highly rated Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. CBS eventually settled an expensive breach-of-contract lawsuit in their favor for $776,300 (about $5.5 million today) in 1973, but the comedy team’s racing team never got back on track.
