When he nears his house, Rudy runs ahead of the rest of the party, remembering that the Man-God told him he’d “regret” going to Begaritt. He enters a seemingly deserted house with no one about, but suddenly Aisha appears, then a very pregnant and longer-haired Sylphie who has never looked more beautiful. They tell him everything is fine, allowing his anxious panic to subside, replaced by relief and joy.
When Norn comes home from school, everyone is assembled in one room so that Rudy can properly deliver the bad news about Paul and Zenith. Norn is ready to blame Rudy for not doing enough, but she can’t do that when she sees what’s become of his hand. She descends into a paroxysm of grief, with Aisha and Sylphie doing what they can to comfort her. But she accepts Rudy did all he could and came up short.
Learning about Roxy is another story. Norn can’t accept that Rudy “had it so easy” while away he was able to take another woman abed. He lays into him, and then lays into Roxy, calling her shameless for accepting the offer of marriage Rudy gave her. Roxy admits she feels shameless, and turns to leave. Rudy doesn’t want to let her go, and prepares to tell her to wait … but someone beats him to it: Sylphie.
Norn may have said a lot on her behalf and in her defense as Rudy’s wife, but she hasn’t been able to express her own position on the matter, which is that she accepts Roxy as Rudy’s second wife. She’s known about Roxy from Rudy for a long time, after all, to the point it caused her jealousy. But actually seeing the object of his praise in the flesh, she sees herself: just an ordinary girl in love. If their roles were replaced, Sylphie could see herself doing what Roxy did, so she doesn’t hold it against her.
Here Sylphie cements her role as “Best Girl” in this entire series, as someone who loves Rudy so much she totally understands others loving him just as much and is generous enough to share that love. While she admits to having been given a shock, there was nothing she found “unpleasant” about this situation. Roxy loves Rudy, and Rudy loves Roxy.
Sylphie loves Rudy, and will come to love Roxy. So too, perhaps, will Aisha and Norn. Norn is still reluctant to accept this, and lets out her aggresion in sword fighting lessons with her big brother. But he’s not a follower of Millis, and their own father had two wives. Norn realizes she spoke before she thought in the presence of Aisha, who is after all the daughter of Paul’s second wife.
The big day arrives when Sylphie gives birth to a beautiful healthy baby daughter with Rudy’s straw-colored hair and her burnt-red eyes. In two lifetimes of crazy events and adventures, nothing could prepare Rudy for the moment he held the tiny human being he and Sylphie created. It also helped him understand what it means to be a father, and how he failed as Paul’s son.
Rudy visits Paul’s grave with two cups and a bottle and gives him a report on how his life has been going. They named their daughter Lucie Greyrat, and shortly after her birth Rudy and Roxy wed, so he now has two wives just like Paul did. He apologizes for letting the memories of his past life interfere with him being a proper son, but now he realizes just how much he still needed to grow up, and how much he still needs to now that he’s a father.
The Greyrats may have lost Paul, and there’s no guarantee Zenith will ever recover, but beyond that all is well. Rudy, Sylphie, and Roxy will no doubt enjoy a pleasant married life together. Lilia and Aisha will continue with house duties and taking care of Zenith. Norn will continue her studies, and seems determined to grow strong enough to wield her father’s sword.
Most importantly, the Greyrats are now back under one roof together. It’s a fine place for a pause before the inevitable Mushoku Tensei III, which I’m sure will feature the return of Eris, the third—and in one important way, first—woman in Rudy’s life. Until then, we bid the reunited family farewell.
