Hmm, this is a little more interesting. Protagonist Asamura Yuuta isn’t as obnoxious as 2.5’s otaku Okamura, but his personality is dangerously close to wallpaper paste. It came as a surprise that his dad’s new wife’s daughter, Ayase Saki, is not only his age, but a beautiful gyaru type (at least in terms of appearance).
What I will say about this is that it features two pretty mature high school-aged kids coming to an agreement based on mutual respect. Neither Yuuta nor Saki want to rock the boat or cause trouble for their parents, so they decide to maintain a cordial relationship. And while she does a lot of qualifying and isn’t looking for sympathy, it’s clear Saki and her mom’s life wasn’t the best before their parents married.
The show also does a good job depicting the initial awkwardness of suddenly sharing a living space with new people. I like how Saki, who’s only known a six-tatami apartment, is amazed by the space of the Asamura’s otherwise average apartment, and the detail of getting the lights mixed up. That said, with the concerted effort for these two to “smooth out” a potentially fraught situation, they both come across as a little boring.
A subdued palette, gentle, ambient soundtrack, and very leisurely pacing all conspire to give this an almost Yuru Camp-like slice-of-life tranquility, which I was not expecting considering the premise. This episode seems to go out of its way to make clear this is not going to be the trashy dreck you usually associate with material with “stepsister” in the title. If nothing else, I’m intrigued enough to keep watching for now.
