VTuber Legend: How I Went Viral after Forgetting to Turn Off My Stream stars Sakura Ayane clearly having a hell of a good time as the voice of Kokorone Awayuki, a VTuber struggling to gain views and subscribers with her pure ladylike snow princess character. She thinks she’s ended her latest stream, cracks open more than a couple of 10% Strong Zeros, and proceeds to reveal her true persona while watching some of her fellow Live-On VTubers.
…But she never ended her stream. Instead, her avatar is frozen while her audience can hear her being rowdy, drunk, horny self. When word-of-mouth spreads that Awayuki-chan forgot to turn off her stream, it goes viral, even as she passes out and snores through the night. It’s only when she wakes up and gets a call from her manager that she learns she’s finally “made it” in the VTuber space.
This isn’t the way she thought she’d break through, but her manager and Live-On seemed to believe it was a distinct possibility she’d eventually drop the pure lady act and cut loose. Now that she has and it turned out so well (viral without engendering any abusive or toxic commentary), they’re happy to keep letting her drink while streaming, and keep being herself.
This is a littler bewildering and surreal to Awayuki at first, but she was only playing a role of somebody else because she thought that was the easiest path to monetization and fame. Now that she knows her true unruly self is far more popular and appealing, and she starts a new stream with her true personality, she finds it a lot more fun and engaging.
While my only exposure to the world of VTubers is Kiui in Jellyfish Can’t Swim in the Night, I found this premise extremely engaging and appealing. Chalk a lot of that up to Sakura Ayane’s bravura vocal performance solid production values, and tons of little details that reference and educate in an organic way. Awayuki has herself another subscriber!
