Well, that might’ve been the worst episode of Oshi no Ko, and it’s not hard to see why: there was scant Kana, Aqua, and Akane time, there was no Ruby time at all. The focus of the episode is on the conflict that arises between the scriptwriter GOA and the mangaka Samejima Abiko, and becomes a primer on the fraught game of telephone that is adaptation.
After Abiko makes her demand to change the entire script, we flashback to the first day of the production with cast introductions. Aqua is cordial with Akane, Kana bristles at their interaction, and Melt vows to do a better acting job than his first gig. We then learn that Samejima Abiko was once Kichijouji Yoriko’s assistant, and while she’s long since surpassed her in fame and sales she still values Yorikos advice on how to deal with adapters of her original work.
The central problem is that while Akibo created a manga loved by millions and already made into an anime, she’s also a ol’ weirdo by Yoriko’s reckoning, and not just because she speed-brushes her teeth with two brushes. Returning to the present, Akibo basically claims that her work has been twisted into an abomination and demands that it be redone wholesale to her exacting standards.
In effect, Akibo throws a tantrum, and the producers have to bend to her will because she has the power to rescind her permission to use her work for the play. She may not personally have the cash to cover the cost of breaching the contract, but her company does, and isn’t about to do anything to disrupt their golden goose. So the scriptwriter GOA loses his job.
This episode delivers a lot of insights into the extremely arcane and inefficient process of adapting an original work into a play script, and how that process was far more to blame than GOA for Akibo’s dissatisfaction. He worked his ass off, even through exhaustion and illness, to complete the script by the deadline, only for it to be tossed in the garbage. I felt for GOA, for sure.
But as one of only twelve episodes of Oshi no Ko, I couldn’t shake the feeling this was getting to granular and infotainment-y, at the cost of sidelining the main cast. Of course, that literally happens as rehearsals are on hold until Akibo completes a new script. Aqua reveals his ignorance of “stage around” productions, so Akane decides its time to go on a date to show him the kind of play they’ll be eventually putting on.
