New Zealand June 2024: Sales implode -63.1% on weak economics, high year-ago result

The Mitsubishi ASX is down just -3.1% year-on-year in June.

Only 9,423 new vehicles hit New Zealand roads in June, a distressing -63.1% year-on-year implosion. Although this is a very low level in normal times (well below the 12,016 units in June 2022), June 2023 as an extremely high comparison set as it simply was the biggest month in the history of the country at 25,523 sales. Toyota (-63.2%) matches the market in the brands pole position with 20.8% share. Ford (-23.6%) resists particularly well in 2nd place and posts a 14% share, in line with the 14.3% it holds over H1. Mitsubishi (-61.6%), Kia (-69.8%) and Hyundai (-53.7%) follow. Isuzu (-35.7%) and Mazda (-55.6%) also manage to fall slower, but it’s GWM (+171.6%), recently launched, that signs the only year-on-year in the Top 30 at #10.

Over in the models lane, the Ford Ranger (-8.8%) behaves exceptionally well year-on-year and towers above the competition at 9.4% share. The Toyota Hilux (-65.3%) is back above the Toyota RAV4 (-62.8%) while the Mitsubishi Triton (-56.9%) stays at #4 above the Mitsubishi Outlander (-55.1%) of which 30% are rental sales, and an in-form Mitsubishi ASX (-3.1%). The Suzuki Swift (-65.6%) and Kia Seltos (-53.4%) complete the Top 8. Outstanding performances by the Toyota Highlander at #9 vs. #19 year-to-date and the Hyundai Kona at #10 vs. #21.
