It’s come to my attention Okumura Masamune may not be the focus of the entire 24-episode run of this series about cosplaying, but for now, he still is, and that kind of sucks. He refuses to entertain the notion that he might like Ririsa, even as they test out the club camera with a photo shoot of her in her regular uniform. She hikes up her skirt, removes her glasses, and puts on a bit of makeup, only to drop said glasses, bump her head on the desk, and end up sitting on top of Masamune.
All those manga clichés acted out IRL give Masamune a lot to think about, but from there the focus shifts to the New Student, popular idol and model Tachibana Mikari. She is hounded by her classmates and even ends up getting a bucket of water dumped on her head by a girl just trying to get through the crowd. Mikari ends up seeking refuge in the Manga Club, where she knew she might encounter her childhood friend, Masamune.
Mikari has always loved Masamune, ever since he rescued her from bullies when they were tykes. When he spoke glowingly of Liliel, she decided to style her hair the same way, determined to be his IRL Liliel. His appeal for her ever since is that while everyone falls for her instantly, he’s the only one who never has. He’s a nut she was never able able to crack, and five years later, with her killer looks and fame, she wonders if she can make him hers.
She strips out of her wet clothes in front of him, then he trips on a Liliel doujin and lands on top of her. They lie there in an accidental embrace on the couch, and I thought I knew what was coming: Ririsa would storm in and get the wrong idea. Instead, Masamune covers Mikari up with his own jacket. He hasn’t changed; he still only has eyes for Liliel.
For that, Mikari is actually a little relieved, because it means no one will steal him away from her, even if she can’t quite manage to confess to him properly (not that he’d listen, knowing him). Except even in this she is mistaken, because when she returns to the clubroom Ririsa is in her Liliel getup, and Mikari mistake her for the real Liliel.
While the only Ririsa interiority was her again believing her heart was racing around Masamune due to illness, we did get some solid Mikari time, and I’m always up for a Kitou Akari-voiced character. Masamune may remain a tiresome tool, but at least he’ll have to share screen time with an increasing number of cosplaying women.
