2B—sorry, 2E, is aware that there is no humanity left to fight for. All she seems to be hoping for is a day when the fighting can end and she can stop killing 9S over and over again and simply live a peaceful life with him. But it doesn’t look like that’s in the cards for them anytime soon. When 2B assists 3B and the Theta Squadron, she’s hit by the Machine Lifeforms’ EMP and virus double whammy (via a kiss from 3B), but 9S, the comrade she’s executed countless times, rescues her in the knick of time.
2B’s infection is superficial and 9S is able to cure it, and they’re even able to destroy the source of the signal jamming, but that’s the extent of their wins this week. Even with a clear signal, there’s no response from Command, while 2B and 9S are surrounded and swarmed by a combination of MLs and infected YoRHa soldiers. 2B and the Pods buy time for 9S to upload their data to the Bunker and they manage to merge their black boxes, destroying the entire horde around them.
Things don’t get any better up in the Bunker. 2B and 9S are reunited safe and sound, but when they reach the control room, there are no Operators there and Commander White is unconscious. The monitors show false footage of a YoRHa victory below, but eventually the infected 6O appears to laugh and gloat about having infiltrated the Bunker. 2B, 9S and White are surrounded by rabid Operators. A Pod blasts a hole in the bulkhead to blow most of them out, allowing the three sane androids left to access the emergency escape route.
They’re soon met by the infected 6O, more unhinged than ever. When she attacks 2B, White takes it upon herself to kill her loyal subordinate and companion personally. When they reach the hanger and the flight unites, White informs 2B and 9S that she’s not accompanying them. She two underwent the data synchronization and is infected by the ML virus. She goes down with the Bunker as it self-destructs, her last order to the last two YoRHa soldiers is to survive and keep fighting.
Stark credits roll as the Bunker explodes and 2B and 9S begin their rough descent through Earth’s atmosphere in their flight units. With no more Bunker, there will likely be no more data uploads or respawns. The minds and bodies they have are it. Lily, Jackass, and other unaffected androids may await them down below, but so does A2, who watches their reentry while standing above a pile of destroyed MLs.
This week was a big, bold, Last Jedi-esque shakeup of the structures and organizations we’ve known before. It was exciting as hell and left me at the edge of my seat gasping for more. What happens when the Bunker falls and 2B and 9S are indefinitely stranded on an Earth filled mostly with mad killer foes? We’re about to find out. I just hope A-1 Pictures can keep this production together long enough to show us.
