This week Rin’s little sister Ayaka meets Eiji and instantly takes a shine to him as a big brother. She also clues Eiji in to a hitherto unseen Rin: Lazy-chan, the one who lies on the couch at home and asks Aya to take care of her. When the school term ends and summer break begins, Rin tells Eiji she has zero plans, and he promises they’ll hang out lots.
And they do! They end up crossing a lot of couple-y summer stuff off the list with very little fanfare. Sure, they’re ostensibly on a trip with other members of drama club, but when they get separated, Rin (the only one in a yukata) makes it a point to avoid meeting back up with them so she can hang out one-on-one with Eiji.
She also asks Eiji last-minute to help her watch Ayaka and her friend at the pool. Eiji is such a hit with the kiddies that he gets exhausted from doing the butterfly and rests on Rin’s inner tube very close to her. She takes this opportunity to thank him for coming, and he uses it to tell her she looks cute in her swimsuit. When Rin gushes over how much fun they had with her gal pal Megu, Megu makes it clear that Rin will have to ask him out for real at some point. Ayaka can’t do it!
When Rin heads off with family to the sleepy rural seaside, she makes sure to keep Eiji updated with little videos. Her joyful reactions to their exchange of texts is truly healing stuff. I especially liked how she made sure to psych herself up to send texts saying she’d like him to come take care of her if she gets heatstroke. She knows with Eiji she has to be direct.
The episode closes out with an extended segment with Ayaka and her summer boyfriend Shiro. We learn that the impressionable Aya has been observing her big sister and her various personas and decides to try some on Shiro. I love how easily she’s able to throw the kid off balance. That being said, I do wish we could have closed with an end of summer Rin and Eiji reunion.
