Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines! – 01 (First Impressions) – Keep Moving

I’m a little late to it, but right out of the gate this one has the makings of an Anime of the Season, let alone beating out Alya-san. One of the reasons being it’s just so goddamn visually dynamic. That’s A-1 Pictures for you; it’s like if Aldnoah.Zero was a rom-com with a pulse!

Our MC Inaho Nukumizu Kazuhiko doesn’t and never has considered himself an MC, but a mere background character. According to statistics, 7 out of 10 high school romances end within a year, and that doesn’t count graduation breakups. What he doesn’t get is that like baseball, hitting .300 is still pretty damn good!

As the background character, one day while minding his business at a family restaurant, Kazuhiko witnesses one Yamani Anna being rejected by her beloved childhood friend for a recent transfer student (who is hilariously about to transfer again). Even though she’s known this guy for 12 years, that month was enough to pull him away from her.

When Anna notices Kazuhiko was watching (including the amazingly animated indirect kiss and spit take she does with her friend’s soda) she makes herself at home at his booth, orders feelings to eat, and tells him the whole sitch, despite the fact he didn’t ask.

Anna may be the kind of “Losing Heroine” to which Kazuhiko often wonders how he’d react if they suddenly entered his life, but at the moment all she is is someone who owes him over 3600 yen, which isn’t chump change to an unemployed high schooler.

After meeting him on the emergency stairs (which soon become their go-to meeting place) and learning how much she owes, she agrees to make him lunches each day until the debt is paid. In the meantime, she tells him how her beloved childhood friend is now dating the transfer student and they still want her to hang out with them, something Kazuhiko strongly discourages.

Other characters are introduced cleverly, as the extremely socially anxious and tiny Komari Chika is sent on an errand to bring Kazuhiko to the Literature Club, of which he’s been a member in absentia. It’s bespectacled president asks him to keep coming lest the school get wise to the fact they have fewer than three real members and shut the club down—but warns him to stay away from her BL novels.

Kazuhiko also has a precocious, tiny little sister in Kaju, who tells him she’s in his room most of the time, he just doesn’t notice. She genuinely cares about her big brother’s well-being and wants him to meet friends, so she decides to make him a character bento with which to break the ice. When he tells her he already has a bento “arrangement,” she’s elated beyond measure that he’s interacted with other humans.

We’re introduced to another Losing Heroine in Lemon, who loves her brainiac childhood friend Mitsuki, but watches him head off to cram school with a pretty girl. When she sees Mitsuki converse with Kazuhiko about the Lit Club, she interrogates Kazuhiko about the girl. Anna inserts herself into the convo, and declares that there are two kinds of girls: childhood friends, and homewreckers. The girl Mitsuki is hanging out with is the latter; she and Lemon are the former.

The lunches Anna provides to Kazuhiko as part of her payback program include konbini food and a block of rice, so the amount she owes is not falling very quickly. But one day Kazuhiko arrives at their Spot and continues up the staircase. He spots Anna on the rooftop looking over the balcony, and we’re treated to some rom-com sakuga as her hair ample blur whips in the wind.

Anna is watching Lemon, thinking about how fast she is on the track, and then suddenly Kazuhiko sees tears flowing from her eyes, then being caught by the wind and scattering. It finally hits Anna that she’s been dumped terribly, and while it doesn’t feel anything like a fresh start, she’s simply got to keep moving on as the rest of the world has.

Kazuhiko finds himself moved despite himself. All this time he’s thought about the futility of fleeting relationships the low odds of finding enduring love, and his lack of confidence in himself “or reality”. But now that the hypothetical has become reality, one of those losing heroines is before him, tears in his eyes, pulling him out of the background and onto a rooftop under a gloriously blue sky. I can’t wait to see what ensues.
