The four-cylinder, plug-in hybrid Mercedes-AMG C 63 S is viewed by some as lacking character and soul, and despite AMG’s controversial move away from a V8, it’s doubling down on electrified C-Class models and developing a purely electric version of the sedan.
It’s no secret that Mercedes-Benz is hard at work developing an all-electric C-Class. The upcoming electric Mercedes will compete with the Tesla Model 3 and BMW i4, but unlike the i4, which looks almost identical to the ICE model, the battery-powered C-Class will have a unique design. Our spy photographers snapped it out and about in April, and more recently, a sportier AMG version was caught during testing at the Nurburgring Nordschleife.

Thick camouflage adorns the entire body of the car, but there are some noticeable differences compared with the regular electric C-Class. The front end has been tweaked and includes a pair of aerodynamic canards on each side of the bumper. Designers have also flared the front and rear wheel arches for that trademark AMG look. However, many of the components found on this prototype are most likely placeholders and not the finished parts.
A set of mismatched, sporty wheels and large brakes add to the performance-focused prowess of the electric sedan. It also rocks a subtle lip spoiler at the rear, a feature not seen in non-AMG prototypes.
Underpinning the new electric C-Class, including the AMG model, could be the firm’s MB.EA-Small platform, instead of the Mercedes Modular Architecture of the CLA EV. Further details about the AMG version aren’t known, but it’s safe to assume it will rock a pair of electric motors. The flagship BMW i4 M50 xDrive is good for 536 hp, but we think the Mercedes should comfortably exceed that figure and perhaps edge towards the 670 hp of the C 63 S.
