After a cold open in which Lemon is fixing her hair when her face lights up at the arrival of an unknown date, Kazuhiko arrives home to find Anna has paid him a visit and is on her third helping of leftover curry courtesy of his extremely excited sister Kaju, who is ready to take both audio recording and handwritten notes. Anna has come to give Kazuhiko some somen, in which her dad was apparently paid in lieu of yen. I thought she was doing a bit, but it was even funnier that it wasn’t!
After reviving an exhausted Shikiya Yumeko by tipping a drinking into her mouth, the ridiculous amount of somen boxes frames everyone in the club room in a unique way. They are all quite literally boxed in as Koto and Shintarou propose that they combine all of their individual summer works into a compilation. Afterwards, Kazuhiko learns that Anna has been reading a self-help book about accepting her plight and finding happiness in Sousuke and Karen dating. She not only shines like a deity, but also levitates!
While working on library maintenance with Chika, he gets her to share that her latest work is ranked #8 on the Lit app, something she’s clearly very proud of. He also learns that she and Lemon are still running together, something she’s finding fun … and it’s all Kazuhiko’s fault. Her tone suggests an condemnation which sparks an half-serious apology from Kazuhiko, but the reality is Chika is glad she met Lemon through him.
When Anna texts Kazuhiko to meet her for a drink, Kaju sees it and gets Kazuhiko’s hopes up vis-a-vis whether Anna asked him on an honest-to-god date. His excitement and anticipation is expressed as him taking on a much sterner, sharper, “cooler” character design as the trolly he’s on races along at warp speed. I love these stylistic fluorishes that don’t just exist for their own sake, but to heighten the emotions. See also Anna acting and talking like a drunk delinquent now that her efforts to follow the teaching of her self-help book fall apart.
Their fresh commiseration session is interrupted when Anna spots Lemon … apparently on a date with Mitsuki?! By the time Anna and Kazuhiko pay and head outside, the other two are gone, but in their place is a tiny girl with a face mask, dark sunglasses, and a blindingly bright forehead. It’s Chihaya, who is stalking Mitsuki on suspicion he is cheating on her with lemon. She asks if they can talk somewhere, and they end up at Kazuhiko’s house.
While Anna and Chihaya calmly critique Kazuhiko’s suggestive wall tapestry of scantily-clad yuri battle maidens, Kaju (excited) rolls in with drinks for everyone and explains that there’s a very good reason the girls depicted on the tapestry are wearing so little and all over each other. For not just one but two beautiful young women to be in Kazuhiko’s room with him fills Kaju with joy, but she later confides to a friend that she feels like he’s slipping away.
Chihaya has the same feeling about Mitsuki regarding his possible dalliances with Lemon. She acknowledges that those two go way back, and that it could be construed that she stole Mitsuki from her when he and Lemon should have been dating all along. Chihaya loves Mitsuki, but places his happiness first. If he’s happiest without her by her side, so be it. So she wants to stalk him and Lemon again, with Anna and Kazuhiko’s help.
The next day, they do spot Mitsuki with Lemon again, this time having gelato and laughing together, looking every bit like the perfect couple. At the sight of this, Chihaya slumps over, then runs off to the bookstore. Kazuhiko chases her, and she tells him how she envies how easy and natural Lemon is with Mitsuki, while she only ever worries about not upsetting him. But when Mitsuki comes in the bookstore alone, Chihaya panics, hides in a dressing room with Kazuhiko, and the two are promptly discovered.
They now find themselves in the ironic position of having been caught in a situation that’s not what it looks like, while watching a situation that might also not be what it looks like. Maybe Mitsuki and Lemon are just hanging out as friends! It was exhilarating to witness the sudden inversion of the winner/loser dynamic between Lemon and Chihaya. Whatever is going on, hopefully it all gets sorted out satisfactorily next week.
Until then, we’re treated to a new ED with stunningly gorgeous romantic sci-fi visuals, dancing, and vocals by Lemon’s seiyu, Wakayama Shion.
