New Zealand July 2024: Market rallies back up 52.6%

The Kia Seltos hits its highest ranking since October 2020.

The New Zealand new vehicle market rallies back up 52.6% year-on-year in July to 9,430 units, as July 2023 was hit by new Clean Car Discount policy changes that pushed buyers to forward their purchase to June. This month’s result remains below the July 2022 volume at 11,076. Passenger Cars soar 61.6% to 1,437, SUVs are up 43.4% to 4,902 and Light Commercials up 107.6% to 2,489. The year-to-date tally is now off -20.9% to 72,089, including 8,72 Passenger Cars (-37.3%), 37,566 SUVs (-26.6%) and 21,114 Light Commercials (-1.8%).

Toyota (+69.6%) beats the market growth but its share at 18.6% remains well below the 21.5% it commands year-to-date. Ford (+19%) is a lot shyer and holds onto the 2nd spot for just 45 sales above Mitsubishi (+108.3%). Kia (+46.1%) stays in 4th place ahead of Suzuki (+135.1%) and Mazda (+143.9%) both euphoric. Hyundai (-0.7%) and Tesla (-52%) endure the only year-on-year losses in the Top 20. Meanwhile GWM (+1085%) threepeats at #10.

Model-wise, the Ford Ranger (+46.1%) easily stays on top but sees its share thaw to 8% vs. 9.7% so far this year. The Toyota Hilux (+118.1%) and RAV4 (+23.5%) complete the podium, distancing the Kia Seltos (+182.6%) up to its highest ranking since October 2020, and the Mitsubishi ASX. The Suzuki Swift (+194.1%), Mitsubishi Triton (+315.4%), Nissan Navara (+124.6%) and Toyota Hiace (+217.4%) also stand out in the remainder of the Top 10. Notice also the Toyota Corolla back up to #12, the GWM Haval Jolion up to #20 and the MG 3 making its first appearance in the charts at #22.
