Episode 6 is titled “First Date?”, formed as a question I was ready to firmly reply with a “Nah, not yet.” But what do you know, here at the halfway point Rin and Eiji do go on their first date. Before that, Eiji tears up at the mere prospect of Rin moving away, then follows her about with a video camera to interview the star of the show. Rin can’t hide her giddiness over getting to have lunch with her senpai.
When day turns to night and the hallways grow dark and creepy, Rin clings to Eiji like her life depends on it. Yes, she’s clinging to the guy she likes, but her fear overcomes all. Heck, she’s not even able to do any of her alter egos! The next day, she’s not able to accompany Eiji around the festival, but he still showers her with food and prizes he picks up while doing his stage crew work.
Rin is nervous when she’s about to take the stage, but Eiji promises to give her a reward whether she brings down the house or bombs. When asked what she wants, Rin again summons her courage, and asks, in her own voice, if they can go on a date together. Eiji agrees, and an elated Rin spends all night dreaming of where Eiji might take her.
She’s surprised to learn he’s taking her to Kyoto via Shinkansen to watch a West Side Story-like musical. They both agree the date has a school trip feel to it, but the fact they’re alone together makes it more special. Eiji ends up dozing off just before the show ends, but wakes up to find Rin utterly spellbound, and seeing her like that clearly makes him feel some kind of way.
After some sightseeing and shopping (during which Eiji jokingly asks if they’ll do stuff like this when they’re married) they go a (non-coed) hot spring. Eiji is the first to emerge from the bath, and by the time Rin joins him he’s fallen asleep, so she lies down beside him and watches his face.
When he wakes up to see her napping beside him, she says she wants to “stay with him forever,” before panicking and telling him to forget what she just said—but only so she can say it again under more suitable conditions. Eiji heard her confession, and know she wasn’t acting, but agrees to forget this time, knowing full well another time will come.
But Eiji obviously can’t truly forget Rin expressing her desire to be with him forever, and Rin knows he can’t, leading to some awkwardness as they walk through a park together. Rin has trouble talking or even looking at Eiji, but when she trips on a rock and he catches her, and he suggests they hold hands, neither of them are quite prepared to actually do it.
But they do hold hands! And when they meet up back at school, Eiji quickly breaks the ice by asking “Tsundere-chan” where she’d like to go on their next date. In this case, her personas aren’t about hiding her feelings behind a facade of acting, but about being more comfortable about telling him what she, the real Rin, wants. Kudos to Eiji for knowing the difference.
Now that they’ve gone on one date and are planning another, there’s no denying they are now a full-fledged dating couple. It’s just as clear they’re both over the moon at reaching this stage. They’ve never looked happier, and I couldn’t be happier for them!
