Kimishima Ayano arrives on the stage suddenly, startling all who notice her as she has the silence and stealth of a ninja. This week we learn why when she has a private chat with Masachika: she’s Yuki’s personal aide. This gives us insight into the reason the two are secret siblings: Masachika left his Suou name behind, and has no further obligation to his calculating father.
Ayano isn’t there to confirm Masachika isn’t running beside Yuki for their father’s sake, but her own, as she considers him spurning Yuki to be betrayal. However, Masachika assures her his decision was made not because she loves Alya, but because it was what he decided to do. He still cares about Yuki more than anything else in the world.
Ayano, who is clearly bummed Masachika is no longer part of the Suou clan, is comforted and assured by Masachika’s words, especially as he makes it clear he’ll deal with no go-betweens: if his father has a problem, he can bring it up to him in person.
We take a brief break in the Suou clan intrigue to get more of Alya flirting in Russian, specifically when Masachika’s friends foist a gravure mag upon him. For the record, he picks a model who looks most like Masha. Also for the record, Alya should have noticed by now that Masachika can understand her…why else would he react the way he does?
Ayano makes her report to Yuki, who now knows her dear brother isn’t messing around, and is in this election to win it. She also has a little fun at Ayano’s expense, noting not inaccurately that her submissive manner of speaking makes her sound like a loyal sub.
When Ayano asks her what a “sub” is, Yuki comes up with a backronym on the spot: Serving Under a Boss. While I can’t say I understand the wordplay in Japanese, it came through in translation! Also, pretty sure Yuki breaks the fourth wall for the second time. I don’t mind!
At the welcome party for the two new StuCo members Masachika and Ayano, Yuki and Alya have themselves a friendly little game of poker with KitKat bars at stake. Yuki is mopping the floor with Alya, which the president and his gf chalk up to Alya being such an open book.
They also mention that unlike Alya, Masha’s true thoughts and intentions are elusive. Ayano also tells her new councilmates that she’s been serving Yuki since the second grade; that means she’s essentially part childhood friend, part-half-sibling to her and Masachika, whom she almost lets slip she also served.
Masachika volunteers to join Masha to buy everyone some new drinks (everyone but Yuki and Ayano are impressed he recalled their order perfectly), and Masha uses the opportunity to thank him for running with her sister and looking after her.
Masha admits that she’s decided to be more of the happy-go-lucky laid back sister to Alya’s approach of going all out and taking things up to 11. And because she’s used to this kind of role, she also suspects Masachika to be hiding his true responsible and reliable self from common view.
Masachika doesn’t deny it, and even explains why: in acting like a slacker, just as in leaving the Suou clan, he is looking after himself; making sure not too much is expected of him. He implies that this is the height of wretched selfishness, and explains his lack of self-worth or worthiness to be Yuki’s brother.
Things end on a sour note, with Taniyama Sayaka coming in hot. She accuses Alya of stealing Masachika away from Yuki for spite. When Masachika comes to Alya’s aide and makes clear it was his decision to run with Alya, Sayaka challenges him to a Student Congress on the spot. Alya insists on being involved, since she and Masachika are running as a team.
Frankly, it’s a lot of sudden drama to handle, as all of the Suou family stuff is conspiring with the school politics stuff to squeeze out the fun romantic comedy. At least Yuki is only taking it semi-seriously, admitting at one point that she’s sounding like a final boss. Someone needs to tell Sayaka to maaaybe take it down a notch!
