We begin this week’s episode by catching up on the last few days of Ayase’s diary entries, as she tries to put her evolving feelings into words. She’s grateful for everything Yuuta has done and wants to pay him back, but she also curses herself for starting to act like “a character in a novel,” particularly when she thinks about Yuuta and his pretty senpai, Shiori.
Those diary entries are a useful look inside Ayase’s head as she’s a lot more guarded on the outside. Her mom and Yuuta’s dad are worried they’re both spending too much of their summer working while hardly ever doing anything for fun. Ayase and Yuuta have learned that they both prefer solitude, and that they’re also hard workers. You could even say they prefer to work than to sit around.
Even in her diary Ayase can’t quite explain why she chose to apply for a part-time job at the same bookstore as Yuuta and Shiori, but once she does, she breezes through the interview, and once she’s working, she’s a natural with the customers. When she can’t find a book, Yuuta helps her find it, as kind and supportive both at work as outside of it.
When Yuuta learns from his friend that he and Ayase were invited by Maaya to hang out at the pool, he asks Ayase about it. When she asks if he wants to go, he’s honest; he’s not sure he’d blend in with cheery people. She also says she won’t be going. Here was an opportunity for them to take a load off, relax, and have fun, but neither will allow themselves to do so. Yuuta claims discomfort, while Ayase is currently mired in an unpleasant feeling she’s identified as “jealousy”.
