This week Nier thankfully takes a break from all the death, tragedy, and general bleakness it is more known for and has a little bit of fun. A2 wakes up in Pascal’s pacifist Machine Lifeform village and her first instinct is to summon her katana. But as much as she may hate MLs, the fact is these MLs are not, at the moment, her enemies. Add to that the fact 2B’s last order to Pod 042 was to look after A2. But that doesn’t mean taking orders from her.
Meanwhile, 9S is safe and mostly sound back at the Resistance camp, thanks to the tender ministrations of medical/maintenance units Devola and Popola, who just might talk more in this episode than they have in all previous Nier episodes combined. I like the fact that veteran seiyu Shiraishi Ryouko voices both of them—Devola with her usual gruffness, and Popola more gently.
When A2 ignores her new Pod’s warnings about her systems requiring repair and tries to leave the village, her entire body loses its mobility and shuts down. She wakes up once more in a bed surrounded by Pascal’s nieces and nephews, who are scared of the YoRHa soldier but also fascinated, and try in their own way to heal her by splashing water on her head and attempting (but thankfully not succeeding) in burning pine sprigs atop her body.
A2 is short of temper and quick to anger, even though the ML kids arrange to push her around in a cart. Pod cannot stray more than 100 meters from her, so he can’t retrieve the replacement part she needs to fix her body. Pascal can help her, but A2 is loath to ask an ML for more help than she’s already gotten. Eventually she realizes she has to at least pretend to play along with the ML kids to calm them down. They take such a shine to her that they start calling her Onee-chan.
Eventually someone shows up A2 surely thought must be dead by now, but is clearly glad to see: Lily. She takes A2 to the camp where the redheaded twins fix her up. Lily admits Miss Number 2 is a lot wilder and has a much sharper tongue than when they last lived and fought together, but it’s just as clear that A2’s heart remains the same. She also admits to hating MLs, but has to put the safety of her remaining people above that hate. A2’s reaction faces and bashful expressions are priceless throughout.
The same can’t be said of 9S. He knows what he think he saw—A2 killing 2B in cold blood—and exacting revenge by killing her and as many MLs as he can with the life he has left. Of course, he’d have a much easier time of that if he’d simply remained at the camp, where not only could his repairs be completed, but he would have also run into A2.
I’m sure a confrontation is in the offing. But what 9S needs to think about is whether 2B would really want him to devote the rest of his life to revenge, death, and despair. 2B entrusted A2 to 9S’ care; she wouldn’t want them to fight. Perhaps, as A2 did in the village, it would be best if he took a proverbial chill pill.
