Turns out Mitsuki wasn’t cheating on Chihaya, but simply asking Lemon for relationship advice, something he’d probably never ever do if he knew Lemon loved him in a romantic way. I say “probably” because he missed Lemon’s signals she loved him before and is even aware of his well-earned reputation for denseness. Add guillible to the mix, as he takes Kazuhiko’s explanation that he was asking Chihaya for the same thing at face value.
Mitsuki is thus convinced Kazuhiko likes someone from the Lit Club, so arranges a group date with himself, Chihaya, Kazuhiko, Anna … and Lemon. The destination of a mining museum doesn’t initially appeal to Anna, who dolled herself up, but once she sees Chihaya and Lemon enjoying themselves, she does to. When Lemon senses Kazuhiko is worried about her since she’s tagging along on a date with Mitsuki and Chihaya, she assures him she’s fine giving the couple their space.
That’s admirable in theory, but when Mitsuki, thinking Kazu likes Anna, offers to watch a movie with Chihaya and Lemon, Lemon tells him that’s not appropriate, and lets slip that she was “once” in love with him. Mitsuki may be dense, but he can’t help but ask Lemon to elaborate on this, causing Lemon to run out of the museum. When Mitsuki moves to chase after her, Chihaya holds him there, reminding him that she, not Lemon, is his girlfriend.
With no main character to chase after Lemon, Kazuhiko performs the task, finding her at a bus stop during a painfully gorgeous purple and gold sunset. Unaccustomed to comforting heartbroken girls, Kazuhiko asks her what she’s going to write about for the club publication.
Lemon tells a thinly-veiled fairy tale-like story about her and Mitsuki, ending in “happily ever after,” differing from real life. Wakayama Shion delivers a tour-de-force as Lemon’s voice trembles more and more as she tells her story. Then, with the saddest smile and glassy eyes, Lemon boards the bus home.
Lemon doesn’t show up to school, lit club or track for the next couple days, but Koto eventually learns she’s fled to her grandmother’s house in the mountains. Koto is a new driver, so she gathers Kazuhiko, Anna, and Chika to head to Lemon’s grandmothers and retrieve her. Koto initially gets lost, but when they’re all goofing off by the river, Lemon suddenly appears to surprise Anna from behind, and they both end up in the drink.
Once she and Anna are bathed and changed, Lemon thanks Kazuhiko for coming and looking after her, knowing full well why they all came. And while Kazuhiko was 100% led by the nose to this trip by Koto, it’s key to remember he did choose to come, because he does care about Lemon. Maybe not in a romantic way, but as a substitute main character who isn’t about to let any heroines cry if he has the power to stop it.
Lemon’s granny is a gracious host, ordering sushi for dinner and insisting that everyone spend the night—something Kazuhiko hadn’t planned for but Koto and the others definitely did. And so, quite suddenly, Kazuhiko, the background character who had no friends, is having a sleepover in a luxurious mountain cabin with no less than four cute girls. If his sister could see him she just might pop like a balloon out of joy.
Before the trip began, he asked himself what he was doing there, but it would be silly at this point for him to think he didn’t belong. He’s there because he cares about these people, and they’ve come to care right back. Koto advised Kazuhiko, the best way to cheer up is to act cheerful. By that logic, the best way to feel you belong is to act that way.
