During last year’s debut of the Toyota Century SUV, the automaker flaunted a hotter GRMN variant as a one-off. Now, Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda has confirmed it will go into production, adding that aside from Japan, it will eventually be offered in China too.
The news was shared during a meeting between Akio Toyoda and Century owners from China. This event, part of the flagship SUV’s launch in the Chinese market targeting “young leaders,” saw one participant inquire if a GRMN-branded version was in the plans.

The Toyota Chairman responded, “The Century I own is the only GRMN there is for now. Next, I want to make a GRMN that many people from around the world can ride.” When asked if the Century GRMN would be introduced in the Chinese market, Toyoda confirmed, “We’re planning to.” However, he added, “We need to wait a bit.”
Toyoda is referring to the Century SUV prototype with the GR emblems, which was introduced in September 2023. The same vehicle was also exhibited as part of Morizo’s Beloved Cars Collection at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January 2024.
The Century GRMN SUV prototype stands out with a redesigned body kit, incorporating several exposed carbon fiber elements. It also boasts optional sliding doors and rides on a set of black 22-inch alloy wheels.
The company hasn’t disclosed any specifics about the prototype’s specs. However, it’s reasonable to expect a revised suspension, upgraded brakes, and likely a more powerful engine. The GRMN badge typically signifies the pinnacle of performance and handling in Toyota Gazoo Racing’s lineup.

The Century SUV’s standard 3.5-liter V6 plug-in hybrid powertrain delivers 406 hp (303 kW / 412 PS) through an e-CVT gearbox and Toyota’s E-Four Advanced AWD system. A GRMN power boost could elevate performance to rival top-tier SUVs like the Aston Martin DBX707, Lamborghini Urus, and the more Mercedes-AMG G63.
Judging by Akio Toyoda’s comments, the sported-up Century SUV might debut in Japan before making its way to other markets, including China.
