After checking with Saki’s mom about how best to approach her, Yuuta asks Saki again about the pool outing with Maaya and the others. But Saki is adamant that she’s not going, and even if Yuuta wants to, she’s not going to give out Maaya’s contact info without her permission. It’s an even curter exchange than usual between the two, a curtness enhanced by the fact the exchange takes place in a narrow doorway.
While its visuals are nothing to write home about, the direction and framing of scenes is impeccable as always. Position and timing are very deliberate, such as Shiori flirting with Yuuta just when Saki notices them, and smiles a sad smile of understanding to mask what she deemed last week to be jealousy.
After work Yuuta and Saki go home separately, though Saki comes home in time to give Yuuta tips on the best way to microwave leftovers. When he brings up the pool again, she insists she’s too busy, he tells her he thinks she actually wants to go but is holding back, and is worried about her. In her room Saki sits at her desk where various mementos in cassette tape cases are laid out, then she lays out in her bed, almost as if meditating.
The next day she wakes up late, and Yuuta can tell she’s sleep deprived from pushing herself too hard. Rather than let her make him breakfast, Yuuta asks her to take a seat and rest, because she deserves it, and proceeds to make both of them a simple meal of toast, browned ham, and hot milk.
After a couple of satisfying bites and sips Saki says they should go to the pool. Yes, it’s on the day they both have work, but they can swap out their shifts to make it happen. The episode leaves us wondering about the significance of the cassette tape. As the OP hints at, could Saki and Yuuta have met before when they were little, or is it something else?
