Wazamonogatari casts aside all of the mundane everyday qualities of previous arcs this season and goes Full Gothic. We’re in the age of fairy tales and legends, where ancient sexy pantsless ancient vampires inhabit castles. We start with this vampire waking up after having died a fifth time. She wasn’t killed by Acerola directly. Like everyone in the princess’ ruined nation, Acerola’s beauty caused the vampire to kill herself.
We rewind back to the first time in a while this vampire dies, and it’s due to starvation: a gourmet, she’ll only eat who she kills. When her servant calls her merely “Master,” she admonishes him and orders him to say her full, extremely metal title: Deathtopia Virtuoso Suicide-Master. When her servant, Tropicalesque Home-a-Wave Dog-Strings tells her there are no humans left alive in the nation due to the princess, Suicide-Master develops a curiousity and a taste for this walking plague of beauty.
After traversing the nation full of nothing but dead bodies, Suicide-Master comes across a small stone hut built into a mountain. The first time she lays eyes on the princess, she dies, then wakes up in her arms. The princess, named Acerola, tells Suicide-Master that her vampiric instinct to eat her caused her to kill herself for trying to harm her. Acerola blithely warns Suicide-Master to kindly refrain from further attempts.
But you can’t stop a scorpion from stinging, even if it dies, and Suicide-Master is an immortal monster, and if the limit to the number of times she can “die” isn’t infinite, it’s probably still an impossibly large number. Suicide-Master decides to strike a deal with Acerola, inviting her to her ornate Corpse Castle and agreeing to be her counsel her in further dealings with people and nations.
Acerola agrees, as the last thing she wants is to cause more death and destruction. Tropicalesque is scandalized, but as he’s her minion, Suicide-Master’s word is law to him. What does Suicide-Master get out of this? Well, a challenge. Acerola is, currently, nothing but an ingredient in the ultimate vampire breakfast. Now that she’s close by, Suicide-Master can start to find a way through her barrier of beauty, no doubt prepared to die many more times.
So begins Wazamonogatari, AKA Acerola Bon Appétit, the how an ancient vampire (voiced with exquisite haughtiness and nobility by veteran seiyu Fukami Rica) ended up not eating Acerola, but turning her into a fellow vampire and bestowing upon her the name Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-under-Blade. This is going to be a fun one.
