Nines’ exceedingly shitty time back on the surface doesn’t let up even after the show took a weeklong hiatus. He reaches the mysterious white tower only to find it’s protected by an impenetrable barrier. Then he encounters Operator 21O, who joined the descent as 21B to fight on the surface.
She’s infected beyond saving, but not so far gone she can’t run herself through with her sword, which deactivates all the other soldiers attacking Nines. In her final moments she transfers data on the tower to Nines’ Pod, then removes her mask to tell him to do his best. For the first and last time, he answers her with only a single Hai, which makes her happy.
Meanwhile, Lily is having a little too much fun sending A2 back to Pascal’s Village, ostensibly to pick up some materials. Instead she ends up babysitting a bunch of ML kids who have just learned about pee-pee and poo-poo.
A2 keeps mugging for the camera and protesting to Pascal and anyone else who will listen, but at the end of the day she’s spent so much time with the little ones that by the time she asks about the materials she’s to pick up, they’ve already been ready for quite some time.
I don’t know if A2 is warming to the peaceful MLs, but she certainly is tolerating them and regarding them as more than an enemy to be destroyed. When Pod 042 announces that a group of hostile MLs are on their way to the village, A2 summons her sword, suddenly frightening the kids.
But then Pascal swoops in on his flying unit with dual axes and declares that both his and A2-onee-chan’s weapons are to protect the kids and the village. When he learns a huge number of MLs are incoming, Pascal needs to prepare more robust firepower. A2 agrees to hold the line with the other eager “adult” MLs that make up the village defense force.
You got that right: A2, who until recently was nothing but a heartless ML-slaying rage-bot, is fighting alongside MLs to protect them from the hostile MLs. Meanwhile Nines has become what A2 was: alone, angry, and eager to kill any and all MLs in his way (as well as A2 herself, once he finds her). 21O’s data provides the location of three sub-units that must be cleared in order to obtain the three passcodes needed to gain access to the main tower.
When Nines enters the first of these sub-units, located within the sunken city ruins, he finds an entire regiment of MLs, but they’re in Sleep Mode. Nines destroys one, than another, ignoring their cries of pain and their pleas for him to spare them. A solitary knight unit even tells him he has no intention of taking revenge for the killing of his king, but Nines cuts him down all the same.
Finally, he uses Pod 153’s cannon to destroy the “core” of the sub-unit, ignoring it’s fearful cries for help in a child robot’s voice. His reward for this slaughter of MLs who didn’t fight back? The unironic passcode “MY SIN.” The death of 2B and now 21O has hardened Nines, but with two sub-units to go, its unclear if the difficulty level will go up in the next one, or if his frame will withstand the stresses necessary to clear them.
