The opening scene this week is deeply, deeply unpleasant, as Yuki is forced to endure the lecturing of her asshole grandfather, telling her she may not be as naturally gifted as her brother, but losing to him is not an option. Even the slicing of his perfectly-cooked steak is like nails on a chalkboard. Thank goodness once she gets back to her room she’s able to heal herself with an Ayano hug (and vigorous bosom nuzzle).
In the aftermath of the student congress, the boys crowd around Masachika and salute his victory while continuing to keep their distance from Alya. He sees to it she’s involved in the discussion by nudging one of his friends to ask her about the details. However, when talk turns to Sayaka running away from the fight she started, Alya pulls Masachika aside.
In what they believe to be the empty StuCo office, Masachika correctly gleans that Alya doesn’t like people talking shit about Sayaka, even if she was their adversary. She wants to do something to repair the damage done to Sayaka’s reputation, demonstrating what a good girl she is. Masachika agrees to help her, and she is genuinely moved to the point of drawing closer to him, until Masachika calls out the fact Touya and Chisaki were hiding under the desk all along, having been up to something prior.
Masachika gets the ball rolling by asking to speak to Nonoa (who is voiced by Bocchi’s seiyu) in private about Sayaka (who is voiced by Kita’s seiyu). Nonoa jokes about being open to him asking her out at first, as she pegs him as a fellow “miserable cynic” like her who has attached himself to a “shining ray of positivity” in Alya, as she has to Sayaka. They agree to spread the rumor of a plausible explanation for why Sayaka ran away.
Nonoa admits to being drawn to the “mystery” of Sayaka, someone who is seemingly so damn passionate about everything, including Nonoa’s own self-worth. When she sees her old friend sucking face with another random guy, she even slaps her and tells her to stop selling herself short. I’ll admit I do like the dynamic of these two and their complicated relationship, but it does take away from the whole Alya-Masachika thing.
Alya walks in on Masachika after Nonoa leaves and just as Yuki and Ayano emerge from under the desk (always with the desk!). She’s jealous of how close they are, and it’s clear Masachika, Yuki, and Ayano aren’t going to spill the beans about their true relation to each other, which continues to steam my beans, frankly. Instead, their impromptu exam study group turns into Masachika and Yuki successfully hypnotizing Alya and Masha into becoming “unrestrained” and stripping off their clothes.
Chisaki arrives to “reset” them with some kind of martial art, and threatens to do the same to Masachika for peeking. Again, these hijinks are fun in isolation, but especially after the serious (and again, unpleasant) dinner scene with Yuki’s gramps, the hypnotism session feels like more wheel spinning. With only three episodes to go, this is feeling less like a self-contained season and more like the first cour of a larger story. At least, it had better be!
