Aqua doesn’t consider the shadowy figure with glasses someone separate from him. They are one and the same: he is the shadow that won’t let him have fun or rest until revenge for Ai’s murder is fully served. Aqua makes use of the darkness within him to deliver an emotional, feral battle against Himekawa, who at times looks like he’s pleasantly surprised by Aqua’s performance.
We also learn that Aqua can switch things up. It’s not all rage and despair, but a profound sense of longing that he summons when the characters decide to revive Princess Saya. He simply recalls a wonderful, beautiful dream he has in which Ai doesn’t die.
It’s the first time we’ve seen and heard her alive since the premiere, and it’s gutting, because we know it’s just a dream. He runs into her arms and bawls his eyes out in this dream, and that’s what he does with Saya on stage, when that precise emotion is what’s needed most. Akane, of course, is channeling Ai in this scene, and Kana notes that she seems “possessed.”
The premiere is an unqualified success. Akane’s acting buddies sing her praises, calling her a genius, but she thinks she still has a long way to go, and Himekawa and Kana are the true geniuses. Meanwhile, Ruby calls Kana a genius, but Kana thinks Akane is the real genius, and vows to eventually defeat her as the play’s run progresses.
Director Kindaichi and Kaburagi are also pleasantly surprised by the progress the young actors they chose are making. Everyone gets a chance to take a well-deserved curtain call, with the added flair of Aqua princess-carrying Akane to their final group bow. Let’s just say it’s a good thing Kana isn’t facing the audience when she reacts to this!
The cast completes more shows, and after each one they inevitably go out for drinks and yakiniku. Kana gets “drunk” and rants about the role of an actor, even though she’s only drinking ginger ale, while Akane carefully grills and serves Aqua a steady supply of meat. Aqua breaks from the gals to speak to Kindaichi, whom he learns was a founder of Lala Lai, but the director isn’t willing to speak about an “indiscretion” that resulted, and asks that Aqua not pry.
Whether out of his own curiosity or because Aqua has impressed him on the stage, Taiki gets involved and assures Aqua he’ll get the seedy story out of Kindaichi. They head to a very exclusive, members-only bar and club where lots of people in the industry work (and are paid) on the side. They end up getting Kindaichi too drunk, and he passes out on the sofa.
But in a neat twist, Aqua’s true goal wasn’t to pump Kindaichi for information, but to be alone with Taiki. Aqua’s ordered some DNA tests, confirmed that he and Taiki have the same father, and wants to know everything his half-brother knows about the man. We’ll see if Taiki, who spent time in a children’s home, even knows anything.
