The final day of the pool stages of the wheelchair basketball at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games delivered thrilling action as teams battled for placing in the quarter-finals. With high stakes and intense competition, several key matchups determined which teams advanced.
In the Women’s competition, the USA overcame Japan in a hard-fought 62-52 victory to secure their place in the quarter-finals. Led by Courtney Ryan’s 16 points and Lindsey Zurbrugg’s 12 points, the USA relied on their guards to control the game despite their smaller lineup. Japan mounted a strong comeback in the third quarter, fueled by Chihiro Kitada’s 16 points and Mari Amimoto’s 15, but the USA’s composure in the final quarter sealed the win. In the other women’s game of the day, the reigning Paralympic gold medalists and world champions, also secured a decisive 68-48 victory over Germany, topping their group. Mariska Beijer’s double-double led the Dutch, who capitalized on Germany’s turnovers and controlled the game from start to finish.
Meanwhile, in the Men’s competition, Canada stunned Germany with a 68-52 victory, securing second place in Pool B. Canada’s balanced attack, highlighted by Reed De’Aeth’s debut performance and Patrick Anderson’s 17 points, kept Germany at bay, setting up a quarter-final clash with the Netherlands. Great Britain continued their dominance in the Men’s tournament with a commanding 85-50 win over hosts France. GBR’s defense effectively neutralized France’s star player Nicolas Jouanserre, who had averaged 30 points per game but was held to just 3 points.
As the pool stages conclude, the quarter-final matchups are set, with the top teams ready to carry their momentum forward in the quest for Paralympic gold.
