The wheelchair basketball action continued to heat up at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games with the Women’s 5-8 crossover games proving to be fiercely competitive. Both games saw closely contested action, with Great Britain and Germany emerging victorious in their respective matchups.

Great Britain vs. Japan: Intense Match Ends in Narrow Victory

In the first crossover game of the day, Great Britain faced off against Japan in a match that showcased intense back-and-forth play. The game started with both teams struggling to find their rhythm, but Great Britain managed to maintain a narrow lead through the first quarter, ending with a slim 15-13 advantage.

Japan took control briefly, leading by a point at halftime with a score of 29-30. The game saw some fast and frenetic play from Japan, resulting in several missed layups and off-balance shots, which proved costly. Great Britain capitalised on these missed opportunities and came out strong in the second half, quickly establishing a 12-point lead.

Despite both teams struggling from the free-throw line, Great Britain’s superior ball movement and defensive adjustments were pivotal. They closed out the game with a 67-55 victory. Robyn Love led Great Britain with a double-double, scoring 17 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Jade Atkin also had a significant impact with 15 points and 10 rebounds. For Japan, Mari Amimoto and Amane Yangimoto put up impressive performances with double-doubles of their own, scoring 19 points and 13 rebounds, and 15 points and 10 assists, respectively.

Germany vs. Spain: Germany Holds Firm

The second crossover game saw Germany and Spain battle it out in another tightly contested encounter. The game started slowly, with Germany edging out Spain by a slim 12-9 lead in the first quarter. Spain’s defense was strong, but Germany’s height and physicality began to make a difference as the game progressed.

Germany managed to maintain a slight lead going into halftime with a score of 26-24. The third quarter saw Germany pull away, establishing an 11-point lead by the end of the period. Spain put up a valiant effort to close the gap, but Germany’s controlled play ensured they held their lead. The final score of 51-45 in favor of Germany was highlighted by a stellar performance from Mareike Miller, who scored 23 points, and Nathalie Passiwan, who contributed 14 points. Spain’s Beatriz Zudaire and Vicky Perez each scored 14 points, but it was not enough to overcome Germany’s advantage.
