Volvo continues to expand its lineup of fully-electric vehicles, with new additions like the EX90 and EX30. Now it’s working on an electric alternative to its best selling model, the XC60, which will reportedly be called the EX60.
According to Autocar, the EX60 will arrive in 2026 and will be the first vehicle to use Volvo’s new SPA3 platform. The larger EX90 is based on the SPA2 platform.
The SPA3 platform will feature the same architecture and software as the SPA2 platform, but it will have better scalability, which means that it can be used for many different sized vehicles. The SPA3 platform is also expected to use mega casting, which is the process where several body structure parts are replaced by a single part. This new process will reduce weight and make the production process easier.
Volvo recently announced that it’s taking a step back on its plans to only sell EVs by 2030, due to slowing EV sales. Instead by the end of the decade, Volvo will offer EVs, plug-in hybrid and hybrid models. This means that the gas-powered XC60 isn’t expected to go away anytime soon, just like the larger XC90, which is being sold alongside the EX90.
