The previous episode’s sudden announcement that the cute post-credit puppet shows would cease was a telling sign that some serious shit was about to go down, and that’s exactly what happens. Sure, Pascal goes wild in a Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em giant robot fight to protect the children, and A2 manages to survive the ensuing blast. But that’s pretty much the end of the fun this week.
The moment Pascal and A2 can breathe a sigh of relief, an emergency communique from Lily comes in: the Resistance Camp has been infected by the Machine Lifeform virus, and it has turned most of Lily’s fighters into android zombies. Even the few fighters she holed up in the warehouse start to turn. She has to shoot her comrades and they have to shoot themselves to try to stop the spread.
In one final moment of levity, Jackass drives a truck through the only walls keeping Lily from the hordes of zombies outside. Lily orders her and everyone else to retreat to safety while she “takes care” of all her zombie android subordinates, but they all insist on fighting beside their Leader to the end. After everyone thanks Devola and Popola for their tireless service, Lily orders them to withdraw in the truck, to try to save as many androids as they can.
9S’ three-stop quest to unlock the main tower concludes with a riddling ML in clown makeup he swiftly dispatches, followed by the third sub-unit landing atop a field of red flowers, revealing 2B’s flight unit. A recording of 2B telling 9S how much her time with him meant to her and calling him “Nines” is one last cruel twist of the knife for him as he stabs the core in what was once 2B’s cockpit. Then he finally collapses, having pushed his chassis as far as it could go.
A2 and Pascal arrive at the camp too late, of course. Lily is the last one standing, and the virus has all but taken her over. She tells them the virus was spread by the ML children they were harboring. A2 tells Lily that “Freesia” is the name Rose gave her, allowing Lily to say goodbye not to her comrade, but to her family, before Freesia puts her out of her misery before completely succumbing to the virus.
As if Lily’s death wasn’t heartbreaking enough, Pascal approaches the cargo container where the children were hiding to find all of them have been eaten by one of their own, whose eyes turned red due to the fear of being alone. When the kid’s music box “broke”, the fear took hold, and that was the beginning of the end not just for the children, but the entire camp. Turns out the box wasn’t even broken, it just needed winding up. Pascal lets the last surviving child bite and infect him, then activates his self-destruct.
Aside from Devola and Popola, the only humanoid characters left alive in the show are A2 and Nines. The latter now has all the codes needed to access the main tower, which looks to be A2’s final destination as well; a climactic duel seems inevitable. But while Nines wants nothing more than to take A2 apart piece by piece, she may be his last link to 2B, as her memories are somewhere within her.
It’s revealed that Pod 042 and Pod 153 are in communication with each other, and may try to act as mediators to prevent the last two YoRHa soldiers from killing one another. With “mankind” having been long gone for centuries, perhaps it’s best to dispense any notion of restoring “glory.”
Maybe Nines can set revenge aside and forgive A2 so they can live together in peace, as he always yearned to do with 2B. Then again, based on all we’ve seen so far I doubt any kind of happy ending awaits us.
