Each episode delivers fresh insights into Masachika’s past as the future heir to the Suou clan. He was a classic mama’s boy, motivated entirely by a desire to please her. And yet, he couldn’t do it. It got so bad that in the midst of a practice session she simply tells him to stop. Turns out this flashback was a dream; a fever has stirred up unpleasant memories for Masa.
When Alya shows up, having been informed of Masa’s condition by Yuki, I was fully prepared to praise Yuki for doing both him and Alya a solid. You can tell Alya is having an absolute blast being in Masa’s house, demonstrating her cookin’ skillz (both porridge and borscht!), and reveling in the fact the mug she got him is being used.
Watching her nurse Masa back to health is a delightful affair, but the mood is soured when Ayano suddenly shows up that night, in full maid regalia, to relieve Alya. Her outfit was 1000% picked out by Yuki, hoping to stir some shit. The next day when Masa is feeling better but realizes he way overslept, he gets Ayano to confess she gave him extra-drowsy cold pills.
Masachika knows why, too: that “school stuff” Alya was doing while he was sick? Turns out that was Yuki goading her into participating in a one-on-one chat broadcast on the school P.A. system. She starts by making it out to be a favor in order for Alya to declare victory over Sayaka, but when Alya bristles at that, Yuki’s Villainess Mode comes out. She tells Alya she’s taking it way too easy, and offers a fair warning to her: she’s putting her on the air to tank her stock!
Alya takes exception to Yuki’s belief she’s being too nice and passive, and the notion that she’d need to “run to Masachika” for help. Alya is ready to take Yuki on all by herself. And yet, just before the broadcast begins, Yuki drops the tough act and gives her a sob story: she has to win the election for her family’s sake, because her brother, who was supposed to be the family’s future, was simply “gone” one day. Hearing this throws Alya completely off her game, and her performance in the broadcast suffers.
Masa races to school too late to prevent the damage done, and finds Alya sulking in the classroom. But this is where Masa’s indispensibility to her comes right back into play. The radio show was when there were minimal students at school; it thus wasn’t meant to decide the election right then and there. Instead, it was merely an opening move, one designed to dictate Alya’s attitude for the rest of the game.
That is, Yuki was hoping the radio show would send Alya into a negative spiral. Masa, with the peripheral view and knowing Yuki’s game, knows this, and snaps Alya out of it. He reasserts his promise that she is captivating enough of her own, has nothing to apologize for regarding her selfish reasons for running, and loses nothing in charm to Yuki. Thank goodness Yuki couldn’t hear him say that!
Alya appreciates Masa cheering her up, and also notes in Russian that she likes this side of him that is actually getting fired up for the fight. And, of course, that was probably Yuki’s ultimate goal in drugging him and having her way with Alya on the P.A.: to motivate her brother into taking this battle seriously. To draw out her dear big brother’s final form.
Yuki demonstrated masterful scheming, proving she’s not just talk when it comes to the final boss role. She walked the walk too. And yet she maintains she has only a fraction of the talent her brother has. I’m willing to look past the fact this is what was drilled into her by her family and accept that she’s right when she says that.
That means we have yet to see Kuze Masachika at his best, and the fact his devious looks closely resemble Yuki’s says it all: he finally has his head in the game, and is no longer interested in playing to a draw. He wants to win, and the timely alliance forged with the contrite-yet-prideful Sayaka and her shrewd bestie Nonoa makes the chances of victory not only plausible, but credible.
