It had been abundantly clear for weeks before the official announcement that Roshidere would run for more than one cour. As such, the big final battle of this cour is the dueling speeches between the Alya-Masachika and Yuki-Ayano campaigns at the closing ceremony.
No sooner has Yuki gotten her big bro committed and serious about this race than she is thrown off-guard by his overt attempt at intimidation. She doesn’t let this show, but we hear plenty of her inner dialogue as the wheels spin in her head.
Whatever her brother’s intent, Yuki knows this is going to be a tough fight with her brother so motivated and fiery—not to mention what Alya brings to the table. So when she wins the coin toss, she decides to speak first at the closing ceremony.
This show not only has a great face game, but also a great oratory game, as once again demonstrated here. Yuki summons her powers to deliver a forceful argument that brooks no dissent, promising the students the moon while touting her experience. Ayano competently backs her up while also infusing a touch of comedy.
Yuki is a pro, and it shows: the crowd reacts to her speech with a standing ovation, and there’s muttering throughout that this election is all but over. But then a confident and focused Alya takes the stage, armed with the tactic Masachika told her to use should they have to speak second: start the speech in Russian.
Once she delivers the first couple paragraphs in her native tongue, the crowd has essentially reset—the proverbial splash of cold water—allowing her to start fresh in Japanese without having to deal with the lingering hype from Yuki’s speech.
It works like a charm, but it wasn’t going to be enough. No, the most important advice Masachika gave Alya is to simply be herself up there: straightforward, engaging, speaking earnestly and directly from the heart. Alya also contrasts herself from Yuki by admitting she doesn’t have all the answers, nor does she know what being the best president looks like.
The crowd is charmed by this display of vulnerability, and excited by the prospect of taking an active role in helping her determine what it is she’s lacking and becoming a better candidate for them as the campaign progresses. Her speech is met by slow and gradual but eventually very spirited applause.
Masachika follows her by hamming it up a bit, declaring he was the brains behind Yuki’s presidency in middle school, while making clear he dumped her. But he eventually gets more serious and tells them that the ideal president for him isn’t someone who is perfect or perfectly capable and responsible, but someone who can draw everyone together.
To that end, he brings out their former congress opponents Nonoa and Sayaka and announces that should Alya and him win, they’ll become student council officers. These two are the cherry on top of a sundae that Yuki admits to Ayano she cannot beat. But she’s only admitting defeat today. When Ayano points out that Yuki is giving off exquisite Final Boss vibes, Yuki seems surprised, because for once she wasn’t putting on an act!
With the closing ceremony speech battle thus won handily by Alya and Masachika, they proceed to check out their final exam scores. Alya ranked first in the class, while Masachika ranked only 33rd, which means Alya wins the bet. Because he knows she mentioned something about first-name basis, he suggests that she start calling him by his now that they’re officially running mates.
Alya can scarcely hide her delight, but also exhibits quite a bit of bashfulness when she finally calls him “Masachika-kun.” While Yuki is all about the boss vibes, these two emanate some strong romantic couple vibes.
That continues when Masachika proposes they meet up during summer break in order to prepare for the upcoming race. Alya flashes her brightest smile when voicing her enthusiastic agreement with his proposal. It’s not like she ever was subtle before with all the Russian flirting, but Alya is no longer even trying to pretend she’s not into Masachika.
Meanwhile, it seems Yuki’s first shot not only woke the little Machiavelli within Masachika from his slumber, but also imbued him with a bolder desire to engage with the candidate he chose. Just as Yuki has brought out the best in Masachika, he has brought out the best in her, and it’s only making him more smitten with her. Whenever the second cour airs, I’ll be there to watch how this election—and relationship—turns out.
