Arima Kana loves Aqua so much it hurts. Her heart skips a beat when he agrees to tag along on the Miyazaki trip, and again when he sets up a time and place for them to go luggage shopping. She spends hours trying to find the perfect outfit, posing in each one like a magical girl transforming. As far as she’s concerned, this is a date with the boy she loves; his “fake” girlfriend be damned.
Her clothing conundrum leaves her a little late, but he isn’t snarky, and has a hot latte waiting for her to warm herself up…a latte with a heart on top. When Kana sees a man paying for his lady, she gets a little jealous…only for Aqua to swoop in at the perfect time to pay via smartphone when she’s just opening her purse. Then he chooses a white suitcase…the same color as her B Komachi glow stick.
Aqua’s seemingly effortless smooth moves continue as he asks if they should call it, Kana says she’s hungry after all the running around, and he takes her to a churrascaria for which he already had a reservation. He knew she’d be hungry, and for meat. She points out how good he is at escorting a woman, and talk soon turns to Akane. Aqua says it’s time he gave her a “clear answer”.
Kana get super excited when Aqua hails a taxi and her mind starts racing about where he’s taking her…but he ends up simply taking her home. While definitely anxious, I don’t think she’d have been altogether opposed to a cozy night with Aqua, and while she’s partly resigned to him rejecting her for Akane, she can’t quite give up hope, wondering what he’ll do with Akane.
Sure enough, in the middle of one of their laid back dates, Aqua invites Akane to the Miyazaki trip, while dropping a not-so-subtle hint that he needs to have a talk with her. Knowing what a skilled investigator and profiler she is, you’d think he’d try to be a little more guarded, as she immediately picks up what he’s putting down. If he wants to talk things out, she’d rather they do it here and now.
As they walk to an oh-so-familiar bridge as the sun sets and makes the colors more intense, Aqua tells her what he’s thinking: he doesn’t want to “tie her down” with their fake relationship. Akane tells him she already knows he was with her to use her in some way. But she could also tell that he didn’t save her right there on that bridge with self-interest in mind. She’s never dated or been with anyone before, but she wants to be of help to him.
When she mentions his plan to kill someone and how he needs someone like her to share that burden, he tells her how that’s no longer an issue, then gives her the details about the DNA testing, Taiki, and the double suicide. But the more information he gives Akane, the more the detective wheels turn in her head. Aqua hasn’t considered the possibility that he and Taiki share DNA because Taiki’s biological mother cheated on Taiki’s father with Aqua and Ruby’s father.
That, of course, means his father, the one he wants dead, is still alive, something confirmed when Ruby crosses paths with him while visiting her mom’s grave. I get why Aqua took the nearest off-ramp from the vengeance expressway he could, but now Akane is faced with a choice: does she tell him about this and restore the “curse,” or let sleeping dogs lie? Considering they cast Miayno Mamoru as their dad, I imagine we’ll be seeing and hearing more from him soon.
While this is a huge development, I don’t want to diminish how excellent this episode was even before this new daddy news was provided, thanks to Kana and Akane being so damn awesome in completely different ways. Whenever the show roots on Kana I’m rooting for her with everything I can…and when Akane’s the focus, I find my allegiance shifting. It’s the mark of any decent love triangle: there is no wrong choice.
