The Houston Rockets finalized a buyout agreement with forward A.J. Griffin on Friday, allowing the 21-year-old to sit out the upcoming NBA season while considering his future in basketball.
According to Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle, the buyout is valued at $250,000. Griffin, acquired by the Rockets in a trade with the Atlanta Hawks this past June, was not expected to play a major role in Houston next season following a difficult stint in the Las Vegas Summer League.
Despite being the 16th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, Griffin has struggled to gain momentum in his professional career. After a promising rookie season in Atlanta, where he averaged 8.9 points per game and shot 39% from three, his production declined last season.

He only played in 20 games, averaging 2.4 points per contest and shooting a dismal 29% from beyond the arc. Personal issues also kept him sidelined early in the season, further impacting his development.

Before the buyout news, The Athletic reported that Griffin is “seriously considering” stepping away from the game altogether.
While no specific reason has been provided for his decision, it is clear that the forward is taking time to reevaluate his career and personal life. This unexpected development comes just two years after he entered the league as a highly touted prospect out of Duke.

Griffin’s situation is even more complex given his lineage as the son of Milwaukee Bucks head coach Adrian Griffin.
