The New York Knicks have been one of the biggest stories of the NBA offseason. Following their strong performance last season, expectations are high. A blockbuster trade for Mikal Bridges and extensions for key players like Jalen Brunson were positive moves. However, there are still areas the team needs to address.
While it might not be an urgent issue, a deep playoff run will require the Knicks to strengthen their frontcourt depth. Specifically, their big-man rotation lacks depth, with Jericho Sims as the only option behind Mitchell Robinson.
Robinson had one of the best seasons of his career last year, and the Knicks will rely on similar production. However, the backup center position remains a concern.
After losing Isaiah Hartenstein to a deal with the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Knicks need options. Fortunately, there are a few players who could be available. Here are three that would make sense for the Knicks’ current roster.
Walker Kessler, Utah Jazz
The Utah Jazz’s Walker Kessler has been an impressive defender early in his career. While his second year didn’t bring the leap many expected, he remains a solid contributor.
As a potential backup for New York, Kessler could be an ideal fit, particularly as a replacement for Hartenstein. Though he didn’t take a major step forward, Kessler is a quality rim protector and rim runner.

Last season, despite falling short of expectations, Kessler still posted solid numbers. In just over 22 minutes per game, he averaged 8 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks. His defensive impact makes him a strong candidate for the Knicks’ backup center spot.
Jonas Valanciunas, Washington Wizards
Jonas Valanciunas is another option the Knicks could explore for the backup center role. While not as strong defensively as Kessler, Valančiūnas brings a big, bruising presence in the paint.
Offensively, he offers a combination of interior scoring and some three-point shooting. It’s expected that the Washington Wizards will trade him before the deadline, after signing him to a team-friendly deal to acquire assets.

Valanciunas biggest upside for New York is his rebounding. A career double-digit rebounder, he can hold his own on the boards, both defensively and offensively. While his defense isn’t elite, the Knicks’ strong perimeter defenders could help minimize his limitations.
Clint Capela, Atlanta Hawks
Clint Capela from the Atlanta Hawks is another name the Knicks could consider. With Atlanta going through a retooling phase, Capela could be one of the first players moved in a trade. His rebounding and rim-running would be valuable assets for New York, even if his skill set overlaps with Robinson.
Defensively, Capela is a force, having finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting just a few seasons ago. He’s a consistent double-double threat, averaging around 12 points and 12 rebounds per game over the last seven years.
Adding that level of consistency off the bench would be a significant upgrade for the Knicks, filling the gap left by Hartenstein and completing the roster.
