With the rousing success of the Tsuwabaki Fest and Chika getting to bid farewell to her first love, I thought we were done with her arc. Boy was I wrong! Her first challenge as president is to attend a meeting of all the clubs and the StuCo and deliver a speech and activity report. Chika is not a public speaker, so Kazuhiko offers to talk in her place, but Chika believes that she and only she can do this.
Anna, ever the mediator (and eater), suggests they go to a petting zoo so Chika can practice with animals before having to face humans. When Anna runs off to buy more food for her diet (?), Chika asks to practice with Kazuhiko. He can tell she’s improving, but not fast enough. He again offers to talk at the meeting, which is in less than two days. By doing so, he hurts and angers Chika, who runs off.
Kazuhiko didn’t want to hurt Chika, but his lack of tact did so anyway. Anna, once again while eating, delivers some sage advice to him: He can’t just tell Chika how he feels; he has to get her to say how she feels too. Kazuhiko is determined to make up with Chika, while learning from the mistakes he made that hurt her.
When he forgets his umbrella when it rains, Kazuhiko’s little sister is waitif with one, and he tells her how things went with a friend of his. Intuiting he means a girl, Kaju reminds him how he always supported and protected her when they were little, even at the expense of him making and hanging out with his own friends. He tells Kaju he wanted her to be herself, and so Kaju asks him who he wants his friend to be.
Kazuhiko starts off with an apology to Chika, but it’s literally seconds before the big meeting begins, and she doesn’t have time to absorb it. The meeting moves at a breakneck pace, and when it’s Chika’s time to speak, she can’t get the words out. The cap of her water bottle goes flying, and she drops the activity report. Kazuhiko comes in claiming to be the president, and a furious Chika chucks the bottle at his face and runs out.
Once more, Anna offers Kazuhiko some food and comfort. He tried to be the bad guy, but Chika didn’t want him to be that, only making the situation worse. But the battle isn’t over. Anna is quietly the MVP of this episode for getting a stumbling Kazuhiko off the ropes and telling him to get back in the ring and keep trying, for his sake as much as Chika’s.
And boy howdy do we get another humdinger of a sunset conversation. Chika bypasses the spoken word and starts furiously texting Kazuhiko her feelings, about how scared she was when she first joined, at the prospect of her senpai graduating, and most devastating, her fear of being abandoned and left alone, and being helpless to do anything about it.
That’s when Kazuhiko realizes Chika isn’t like him. She won’t be okay if she’s alone, like he typically is. So he responds in kind with a single text, then offers a confession…of sorts. He tells Chika he likes her…writing. She’s a good writer, miles better than him, and he wants to support her in any and every way he can so she can keep writing.
With all that in mind, he tells her not to talk about being alone, because she’s not. Not only is Kazuhiko there, but Anna and Lemon show up too, because it turns out their whole text exchange was on the club’s group chat. So what did Kazu text her? I’ll stay with you always.
It’s an overtly romantic-sounding message, and he knows it’s not one he’ll ultimately be able to fulfill. They’re in high school, and eventually they’ll go their separate ways. But that doesn’t matter. Here, and now, he wanted to convey to her that she wouldn’t be alone, and shouldn’t worry about being alone. Anna and Lemon back up that sentiment by embracing Chika on the rooftop.
Chika never wanted to be the president, but thought she had to be. But she doesn’t. That role can fall to Kazuhiko, who will focus on the things she can’t easily do, thus allowing her to focus on doing what he can’t easily do. Sadly, we’ll only have one more episode this season to see what that looks like.
