The Oklahoma City Thunder were arguably the biggest success story of last season. After patiently building out the roster, the team made a significant leap into contention, becoming the youngest team in NBA history to reach and win a playoff series. With the youth on the roster, the team is expected to continue improving, not to mention the shrewd offseason additions by general manager Sam Presti.
Both Alex Caruso and Isaiah Hartenstein were perfect fits for the Thunder. With their defense and rebounding, respectively, they addressed specific weaknesses in Oklahoma City’s lineup. As a result, the team could be even more dominant than last year when they secured the No. 1 seed.
However, that doesn’t mean the team can’t continue finding ways to improve. Presti still has a significant number of assets available and could look to make a trade.
Here are three players who would make immediate sense for the Thunder:
Deni Avdija, Washington Wizards
Deni Avdija was a trade target for the Thunder as far back as last season’s trade deadline. With the Washington Wizards essentially rebuilding, expect some of those rumors to resurface.
At 6-foot-9, Avdija could fit either forward position and excel. In his four years in the league, he has shown growth and potential for further development. The 23-year-old would be an ideal acquisition for Oklahoma City, whether as a one-year rental, a future trade asset, or a potential developmental success story.
At his current value, there’s a lot to like about Avdija. Last season was the best of his young career, as he averaged nearly 15 points and seven rebounds per game, addressing Oklahoma City’s rebounding issues.

On the defensive end, the Israeli has displayed impressive instincts and a high basketball IQ. While his overall game is still coming together, Thunder fans have reason to be optimistic.
Dennis Schroder, Brookln Nets
With rookie Nikola Topic injured, one area where the Thunder are slightly thin is at backup point guard. While MVP candidate Shai Gilgeous-Alexander handles the bulk of point guard duties, the team could use solid insurance.
That’s where they could turn to a familiar face in Dennis Schroder. The German guard was a key player for the Thunder and came close to winning Sixth Man of the Year. Since then, Schroder has gained valuable playoff experience with teams like the Los Angeles Lakers.

That experience, coupled with his consistency, makes him an ideal target for Oklahoma City. Last season, between the Toronto Raptors and Brooklyn Nets, he averaged 14 points and six assists.
Those numbers would make him the perfect backup for Gilgeous-Alexander. Keep in mind, that Schroder already thrived as a Sixth Man of the Year finalist during his previous stint in Oklahoma City while backing up Chris Paul and Gilgeous-Alexander.
Isaiah Stewart, Detroit Pistons
The addition of Hartenstein was a welcome boost for Oklahoma City fans, addressing the team’s rebounding issue. Last season, the Thunder struggled with size and toughness on the boards, something the Dallas Mavericks exploited en route to a six-game playoff victory.
However, there is another Isaiah who could be a valuable addition to the Thunder roster: Isaiah Stewart. Alongside Hartenstein, Stewart could serve as a strong third option in the frontcourt.
A consistent double-double threat, Stewart has been a reliable rebounder during his time with the Detroit Pistons. His potential fit with Oklahoma City wouldn’t be a downgrade, and what sets him apart from Hartenstein is his 3-point shot.

While not as prolific as Karl-Anthony Towns, Stewart has enough range to keep defenses honest. His shooting, combined with his toughness at 6-foot-8 and 250 pounds, would make him an intriguing target for the Thunder.
