While Koyomi isn’t sure he can solve the current chemistry problems of the Naoetsu High Girl’s B-Ball team following the retirement of both Suruga and Higasa Seiu, he promises them he’ll find the missing girls (including the two he just learned about). That’s enough for Seiu to hand him the roster…and also to cheekily ask if he has a girlfriend.
Unsure if they can tie all the attacks to one vampire due to the fact the flash cards were only on one of them, Izuko prioritizes locating the two team members who are still missing. But Koyomi’s only role tonight is to suppress Shinobu, which he attempts to do with a big ol’ box of tasty Mister Donuts.
Araragi takes the opportunity to ask Shinobu what would have happened if she had failed to turn him into a vampire in that subway station during that fateful Spring Break. She tells him pretty much the same thing they saw writ large in the alternate future where Mayoi didn’t die: zombie-like failed vampires—a mound of failures.
Then talk turns to the vampire who made Shinobu; in other words, his “grandmaker.” Shinobu proudly declares she was both made and named by Deathtopia Virtuoso Suicide-Master, 600 years ago. She also refers to her as a “true” vampire, for while she admits to being an equal-opportunity eater, Suicide-Master was a gourmet, and stubborn enough to starve to death over and over.
A timely visit from Yotsugi produces a fair fortune from Mayo’s shrine, which Koyomi takes as an invitation for a nighttime drive. He and Shinobu arrive to find Mayoi training under a massive waterfall of her making, complete with triangulating spotlights. After delivering her usual endearing name-flubbing comedy act (this time with Shinobu participating as well), the Lost Girl-turned-God Mayoi has taken in a guest she wants Shinobu and Koyomi to see.
That guest turns out to be a tiny, malnourished, and mummified Suicide-Master. As Shinobu assumed she’d turned to dust years ago, the sight of her maker in this awful state is a shock. On closer examination, Shinobu determines that she’s not a living corpse, but rather in the equivalent of critical condition. She requires medicine which can only be procured in Hell. Mayoi asks Koyomi if he’ll fetch it, he agrees, and Shinobu kills him with her legendary blade Kokoro-watari.
But after the credits, Koyomi wakes up not in Hell (where he went in Owarimonogatari), but in Heaven, represented by a field of flowers. He’s then approached from behind by a glowing, golden, Venus-like Beautiful Princess, AKA Princess Acerola, wearing an oni mask to hide her face. To borrow from a famous fantasy work, things are getting curiouser and curiouser.
