The 2024 Women’s South American Wheelchair Basketball Championship, hosted by Federación Deportiva Nacional PCD Física, concluded last week, running from 26 September to 30 September 2024, at the renowned VIDENA facility in Lima, Peru. Argentina claimed the championship title with a commanding 57-36 victory over Brazil in the final. The tournament saw four teams—Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Peru—secure qualification for the 2025 Americas Cup, where they will compete for a chance to advance to the IWBF World Championship.
Dominant Defense Leads Argentina to Gold
The five-day tournament showcased the best of South American women’s wheelchair basketball, with Argentina and Brazil emerging as the top two teams. Brazil opened the competition with a close 46-42 win over Argentina, setting the stage for a highly anticipated rematch in the final. Argentina bounced back from the early loss, securing dominant victories over Colombia (52-24), Peru (46-20), and Chile (48-21) to reach the final in strong form.
In the gold medal game, Argentina’s solid defense helped them build a lead that Brazil was unable to overcome. Despite the defeat in the final, Brazil showcased their strength throughout the tournament, earning their place in the Americas Cup and continuing to be a top contender in the region.
Colombia Takes Bronze
The bronze medal match saw Colombia defeat Peru 44-34 in a competitive game that earned Colombia third place and a qualification spot for the Americas Cup. Both teams showed determination and skill, but Colombia’s consistency allowed them to secure the win and claim bronze. Although Peru missed out on a podium finish, their crucial victory over Chile in the pool stage ensured they also secured a spot in the 2025 Americas Cup
With the top four teams—Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Peru—now qualified for the Americas Cup, the tournament in Lima served as a critical stepping stone for the next phase of competition. The Americas Cup will offer these teams the chance to compete for spots at the Ottawa 2026 World Championship. Chile, unfortunately, missed out on a spot in the Americas Cup after finishing at the bottom of the pool phase, losing all four of their games.
The 2024 South American Championship highlighted the growing competitiveness within the region and provided a platform for athletes to showcase their skills as they aim for future successes on the global stage.
