Nabiki starts a side hustle involving selling pics of both Ranma-as-a-girl and Akane to Kuno, but expensive photos aren’t enough for him: he longs to meet the cute pink-pigtailed girl again. Nabiki tells him he has to contact her through Ranma, and even when they go through the whole cold water-hot-water song and dance, Kuno thinks Ranma is deceiving him and they fight. This ends with Ranma KO’ing Kuno with a combination kick.
While Kuno is deluded enough to believe Akane and the pigtailed girl would be okay with him dating both of them, Akane is far more realistic when it comes to her unrequited crush, Dr. Tofu. She knows he sees her as a child, but is happy just to be able to see and talk to him. After Ranma visits for a readjustment, the doc tells him to take care of Akane, because she’s “really just a softy.” Tofu proves this by temporarily paralyzing Ranma, and Akane carries Ranma on piggyback without a second thought.
Three episodes in, Ranma and Akane have established a rhythm of getting on each other’s nerves or into petty bickering matches, followed by moments of mutual understanding, and even realization that they might actually like each other. Take P.E. class, when Ranma and his classmates are watching Akane play softball. When she makes a game-saving catch and smiles, Ranma can’t help but blush. She is cute, and the barbs he spouts like “plain Jane” or “tomboy” aren’t fooling anyone.
When Ranma learns that not only does Dr. Tofu like someone other than Akane, but that that person is her pretty older sister Kasumi, Ranma is concerned when Akane looks forlorn, or even near the point of crying. He knows he can cheer her up by shifting the mood back to their combative dynamic. More to the point, she can tell he’s trying to console her and appreciates the effort. Ranma wouldn’t bother to do so if he didn’t care about her.
During a sparring session to blow off steam, Akane is mad that Ranma only dodges and doesn’t try to land a blow. The blow he ends up landing is to her heart, telling her she’s cute when she smiles. This freezes her and enables him to poke her forehead and win the round. While the comment was a tactic, it also felt sincere, so it’s sweet to see Akane smiling in her mirror later that night, even if Ranma ruins it by appearing in her window. In ever-so-gradual fits and starts there’s romantic progress being made, and it’s immensely fun to watch.
