Draymond Green is the latest NBA player to reveal his ‘welcome to the league’ moment and it perfectly sums him up.
Most players describe moments that made them realise the NBA is much tougher than anything they had seen before.
But in true Draymond Green style, the Golden State Warriors forward gave an answer that surely no player has ever come out with before.
Draymond Green has developed a reputation throughout his 13-year career for being an interesting character, to say the least.
The 34-year-old has undoubtedly been integral to the Warriors’ success but his lack of discipline has often been an issue.
Some suggest that this has become more problematic in recent years but Green says that he has always been the same, even in his NBA debut.
“The one that I remember the most is my first bucket. I shot the three on Josh Smith. He didn’t guard me and I got a [technical foul],” he said on The Draymond Green Show with Baron Davis.
“First bucket. I started talking crazy to Josh Smith. ‘That’s my bucket’. That’s my ‘welcome to the league’ moment right there. First $2,000 gone, down the drain.”
Green went on to say that the moment proves his personality has not changed from then until now.
“I’m still trying to figure out how people say ‘there’s something wrong’. I’ve been the same way forever, I just am who I am.”
What to expect from Draymond Green in 2024-25 NBA season
Draymond Green has never been the type of player to put up impressive statistics – he has never averaged more than 14 points per game.
Instead, what he offers can easily go under the radar. He makes the Warriors tick with his playmaking, defense and leadership.
But he needs to stay on the court this year if the Warriors are to make the playoffs. He only played 55 games last season and that number really needs to be 70 or more.
