After Chinatsu “drew a line” between her and Taiki, she’s acting like everything’s normal again, and Taiki is at least partly glad about that. Yes, his progress with his crush has ground to a halt, but she also doesn’t seem to hate him!
Meanwhile, he has his summer study session with his classmates, including the academically shaky Hina. Overhearing middle schoolers talk about the upcoming fireworks festival reminds him of how he and Hina first met when they were in middle school.
When Hina was late for the fireworks thanks to gymnastic practice, and the candy apples she salivated over were all sold out, Taiki was there with the last one, just for her. He probably didn’t know how much it meant to her. Now, in the present, knowing things are tough for Taiki right now, she comes out and suggests they go to the fireworks again. Of course, Taiki assumes she means in a group, not just the two of them.
Hina asks the friend she had to turn down just earlier, but she and all her other friends already have plans. Kyou, like Hina’s friend, knows full well that Hina wants it to be just her and Taiki. Chinatsu is just going with her basketball teammates for a girls-only night.
When Taiki tries avoiding Chinatsu by going around the gym, Hina punches him. While she understands him not wanting to trouble Chinatsu or mess up their relationship, she believes him chasing relentlessly after goals is what makes him cool, and insists he stop acting uncool.
Taiki plans to go on a special badminton practice session with Haryu the same day as the fireworks festival, setting up the possibility he’d miss the latter. But at least during this session, Taiki gets some solid pointers from Hyoudo that help him focus his goal on something more realistic than simply cruising to the nationals. And as he says, he’s always best when chasing after something.
He ends up making the festival, but after Kyou lies about having a fever, Taiki know knows it will be just him and Hina. She arrives just as he’s bought two candy apples for the two of them, and he tells her she’ll have to pay him back—but he only says this only before he turns around and sees her, resplendent in her floral yukata. It’s a sight that’s gotta be worth a candy apple at least!
And so here we are: shifting focus from Chinatsu, who truly does seem to want to focus on basketball even if she does like Taiki, to Hina, who needed Taiki to develop a crush on another girl to realize she had to get serious about getting closer to him. Will Hina end up friendzoned by Taiki? Probably! Distance or know, he’s still got the hots for Chinatsu. But hey, let’s see where this fireworks festival date—and it is a date—shakes out.
