Ranma likes Akane, and Akane likes Ranma. This much is clear after eleven episodes. But neither of them is anywhere near the point where they’d be willing or able to actually admit it. Neither of them are sure of the other’s feelings, because they’re not being honest.
Its under these circumstances that their relationship is put to its first true test thanks to Shampoo. Ranma was a guy when he defeated her, so by the traditions of her backwater village she gives him the Kiss of Love, not Death, and becomes his wife.
There are some clear problems with this. First, Ranma is already engaged to Akane. Second, Shampoo is a stranger, and even if she could speak Japanese, she’s utterly committed to killing Ranma whenever he’s a girl. The lack of honesty between Akane and Ranma exposes them both here.
When Ranma sees Shampoo fawning and glomming on Ranma, and Ranma giving minimal resistance (since Shampoo is adorable and charming), her lack of understanding of how much Ranma actually cares for her leads her to assume he’s two-timing her, so she unilaterally breaks off the engagement.
What makes this scenario frustrating is that Ranma isn’t trying to break up with Akane, nor does he want to. But Shampoo is always around, even sneaking up in his bed when he’s asleep. The optics suck, and they’re all Akane has to work with. Mind you, she doesn’t know she’s sleeping almost nightly with a transformed Ryouga.
What her whole family can tell, like us, is that her feelings for Ranma are such that she feels genuinely betrayed, not just jealous. Both Ranma and Akane share the blame for this situation, via their lack of the honesty and proper communication crucial in any relationship.
Ranma can do more to reject and condemn Shampoo, but circumstances never seem to be in his favor. He knows it looks bad, but when Akane doesn’t fully accept his explanations, he lashes out with his usual canards: that Akane “isn’t cute” and no one would ever be jealous over her.
Perhaps I’m being too harsh. These are a couple of kids completely unaccustomed to romance suddenly thrust into an engagement against their will. All this time that engagement has stood as unmovable force of nature, and their reluctant submission to that force has gradually evolved into mutual respect and affection. And then Shampoo had to serve lightly-browned Ranma P-chan for lunch.
P-chan survives, but Shampoo takes issue with Akane ruining her “husband’s” meal, so she gives her the Kiss of Death. Akane is just fine with that; she’s seen and heard enough out of Shampoo and is ready to give her the ol rinse-and-lather. If she’d challenge her to a fight, a fight is what she’ll get.
The only problem is, Akane is no match for Shampoo. Ranma knows this, having fought both girls. He’s legit concerned for Akane’s well-being, and runs about the school looking for her, calling her by her first name without honorifics, and completely casting aside the fiction that he doesn’t care.
Alas, by the time Ranma finds Akane, the fight is already over. Shampoo took her out with one blow from her chuí, and left her passed out in an athletic field. But while the clouds part in the sky and Akane opens her eyes to a teary-eyed Ranma, the clouds have all gathered in her head: she has amnesia, and has no idea who Ranma is.
Two things are certain: Akane’s memory loss isn’t permanent, and her engagement to Ranma won’t remain broken. It’s just a matter of how and when this mess gets cleaned up, when Ranma has Shampoo constantly shadowing him, lovey-dovey when he’s a guy and killy-killy when he’s a girl.
