While Taro returns to school, Momo brings Hana home, and she and Okarun beg Seiko to let them keep her there so that Taro can visit her after school hours. Seiko agrees and starts dinner, for which Momo starts setting the table.
Inspired by Taro’s directness and threatened by Momo laughing at Jiji’s … whole deal, Okarun tries to put up more of a fight. In the midst of doing the same kind of goofy song and dance that Jiji does, he learns that he’ll be accompanying Momo to Jiji’s house to investigate and deal with the ghosts there.
But before that, Momo decides to stay and wait with Hana for Taro to arrive. Taro scares the shit out of four students at school after dark and races to Hana’s side, but ends up smashed to bits by Truck-kun. Dawn arrives, but Momo stays put. By the time Taro does arrive she’s fallen asleep, while he’s managed to reassemble himself with various vines and garbage, and promises to visit Hana every night—something Momo never agreed to.
On the train to Jiji’s town, Momo, Jiji, and Okarun play Old Maid, at which Okarun is terrible. Their dynamic continues to play out, with Momo laughing mirthfully at Jiji’s nonsense. After being awakened from a nut-related trance, Okarun struggles to find a way to regain and hold Momo’s attention.
He breaks out his cuckoo occult book and starts spewing knowledge of various legends, and finds that Jiji is legitimately interested; moreso even than Momo. Okarun, speaking the most he ever has to anyone other than Momo, realizes he’s having…fun, exactly when Jiji says he’s having fun. Before he knows it, Okarun has a second friend in Jiji.
They arrive at Jiji’s oddly deserted town—deserted but for creepy-looking figures with gray skin and exaggerated smiles. The kids don’t notice them as the begin a long and arduous trek up staircase after staircase. While Jiji has boundless stamina, no doubt used to the steps, Okarun and Momo fall behind and arrive at the top thoroughly winded.
Their arrival at Jiji’s pristine, modern house is somewhat anticlimactic, as Momo isn’t able to sense any unusual supernatural presence. She sits on the couch, pops on the TV, and cheerfully invites Okarun to join her. But the moment he sits down she skedaddles for the hot springs, telling Okarun to get along with Jiji while she’s gone.
Jiji gets out a soccer ball and exchanges passes with Okarun, who is rubbish at first but gets better and better with practice. We learn that Jiji’s head isn’t entirely empty, as he suspects Okarun is in love with Momo. Okarun admits Momo is “very dear” to him and he “respects” her, but ends up in a Momo love-off with Jiji, who come right out and says he loves both her face and personality and everything else about her.
As for Momo, she felt like she was “in the way” of Okarun and his first male friend Jiji, so she decided to get some time in at the hot spring. The problem is, she failed to read the sign that indicated she was in a co-ed bath, and four of the big gray guys soon join her in the bath and warn her of “gators,” men who take advantage of women in these situations. Then they circle her menacingly. She tries to take out their leader with her powers, but she’s quickly overpowered and pulled underwater.
Meanwhile, Okarun notices that an outside wall of the house that wasn’t there before has suddenly appeared. They find a strange hollow wall inside, and when Jiji smashes through it with a sledgehammer, they find a creepy room completely covered in thousands of what look like talismans…I’m guessing the bad kind.
And that, my friends, is where DAN DA DAN leaves us—with Jiji and Okarun finding the likely source of Jiji’s parents’ ill health, and with Momo being attacked by a bunch of big fat creeps. The good news is that there will be a second season. The bad news is that Momo will be gasping for air with her head underwater until Summer, as will I … in spirit.
