It doesn’t take long for us to learn that Akane’s sudden amnesia is not general, nor was it unintentional. The only thing she doesn’t remember from before her fight with Shampoo was Ranma. That’s beause Shampoo targeted Ranma specifically with her special amazoness technique. Nor did the memories of anyone else change; everyone knows Ranma is Akane’s fiancé except Akane.
A lesser man would use this an an excuse to back out of his engagement to Akane, but lest we forget, as much as he may spurn or insult her, Ranma likes Akane, and even if he didn’t choose to be her fiancé, he’s not about to let some shiatsu nonsense mess that up.
He wants Akane’s full memories of him back, so he takes her to Dr. Tofu, who quickly determines the technique Shampoo used and even has the formula for the shampoo that will restore her memory. Alas, that recipe is destroyed when Dr. Tofu encounters his crush Kasumi.
That’s not enough to stop Ranma from making Akane remember him. He’ll swim the fuck back to China to secure Formula 119 there. While the others ask him to bring them back souvenirs, Akane remains flummoxed, but also both impressed and flattered. Who is this guy who would go so far for her? For Akane, that’s a guy she wants to remember. Of course she does! She likes him as much as he likes her!
On his way to China, Ranma encounters Shampoo, who dangles a bottle of 119 right in front of him, leading to a nighttime rooftop chase. Ranma cuts off her escape, so Shampoo sticks the bottle between her boobs.
Rather than try to retrieve it sacred space by force (he couldn’t assault her that way), he works out a deal: he’ll grant one wish to Shampoo, as long as it doesn’t involve marrying him or killing Akane. The problem? Shampoo wishes that he’d kill Girl Ranma, whom she still believes to be a different individual.
Ranma gets Shampoo to say “half-dead” is good enough, and asks Ryouga to beat him to a pulp so he can show her the wish has been fulfilled and get her off his case. Ryouga doesn’t want to help him, since he’s just fine with Akane forgetting his love rival, but Ranma gets him (and both dads) to beat him up anyway.
When Akane tries to break up the fight, Ranma tells her not to butt in, calling her “not cute” in the process. Those words rattle around in her head, and after he launches a wave of similar insults at her, he manages to snap her out of her amnesia.
Now that she remembers him, she gives him a slap for the ages, but upon seeing him passed out on the ground, she smiles warmly. Because she hasn’t forgotten anything that’s happened up to that point. She knows how far he went to restore her memory, even letting himself get beaten up. Unfortunately, this reunion of sorts is interrupted by Shampoo blasting through the wall of the dojo. I mean, can’t this girl just use doors?!
When Shampoo tries to embrace Ranma as her husband, Akane, her memories restored, comes between them. When Shampoo tries her shiatsu on her again, Ranma comes between them. He then decides to come clean with Shampoo once and for all, dumping cold water on himself and transforming into a girl.
Now that she’s seen the truth with her own eyes, Shampoo is distraught beyond words. She can’t even manage to attack Girl Ranma, because now she knows that she and the man who beat her and—at least by the traditions of her village, became her husband—are one and the same. And it breaks her heart.
Shampoo leaves in tears, and Ranma stays up that night on the roof with Ryouga, thinking it a damn shame for things to end that way. But there really wasn’t any other way for it to end; he can never marry her, and she could never accept a husband who could transform into a girl she’s already sworn to kill.
