12-3 in the first 15 games, and 3-12 in the next 15 have put the Golden State Warriors right where they deserve to be, in the middle of mediocrity.
The early season optimism has given way to a brush with reality where the Warriors have a deep roster but one lacking quality throughout.
Combine that with Steph Curry and Draymond Green having the odd games where Father Time has their beating, and the Dubs are in an unenviable situation.
Jonathan Kuminga has been a massive positive but even his future with the Warriors is uneasy so instead of that being a solution, it’s an added wrinkle to the problems.
In such a moment, Steve Kerr can use all the help he can get to get the Warriors firing again and due to an event completely out of their hands, they’ve been given just that opportunity.
Golden State Warriors reunion
It’s the 2021/22 season and the Golden State Warriors have been written off as they didn’t qualify for the playoffs the last two years.
Against all odds, they reach the NBA finals and topple the young upstarts in Boston Celtics to seal their third championship victory in five years, adding an NBA Finals berth to it as well.
Three rings and four NBA finals is a certified dynasty, especially if the 2015 championship is added to that collection but there was a common factor in the latter three championships.
A certain highly-rated assistant coach in Steve Kerr’s staff left for the Sacramento Kings’ Head Coach job and the Kings immediately started improving.
That coach is Mike Brown, who has just been fired from the position he took at the time. Brown arrived at a team that had just finished 30-52 the season before and in two full seasons with him, their record was 48-34 and 46-36.
And with that, the Warriors have been handed the opportunity to negotiate a reunion with Brown, who had already played a huge role in their successful era and now comes with added head coach experience.
What Mike Brown will add to the Warriors
Brown’s man management and his ability to keep a locker room fit and firing has often flown under the radar because he’s an astute tactician as well.
The Warriors regularly used to have some of the best defense in the league when Brown was in the Bay Area and that’s something the current team can use.
As for his man management prowess, that ability is nowhere as important as it is with the Warriors right now. There’s a clear cognitive dissonance between the vets who’ve done it all and the new pieces still adjusting to the expectations of a championship contender.
Green is as fiery as ever while the youngsters have not been able to match their levels from last season so Brown can act as a great bridge between the two camps.
Sometimes, luck is needed to turn a season around and it often happens due to factors outside of your control because you’ve tried everything.
Brown’s firing by the Kings is exactly that factor. The Warriors need to pounce.
