The end of the year hasn’t exactly treated the East Coast very well, with floods displacing residents and causing untold destruction across several states in late November. Disaster has struck again in the closing days of the year, delivering a final blow with more flooding in Kelantan and Terengganu since yesterday.
According to the Bernama, the town of Machang in Kelantan is one of those affected, forcing the closure of a federal and state road, FT 479 Jalan Kemuning-Bukit Belah and D16 Jalan Batu 30-Temangan. These roads are now around 800 mm underwater, said the state’s works department (JKR) director Nik Soh Yaacoub.
Heavy rain in the area has also caused landslides in the area, causing damage other roads. “Landslides occurred on the access road to the VHF station at Bukit Bakar and FT 008 Jalan Kota Bharu-Gua Musang near Dataran Bukit Belah,” he told the national news agency. “JKR has placed warning signs and barricades at the affected locations to ensure users exercise caution and adhere to the established regulations to prevent any untoward incidents.”
Road users are advised to use alternative routes for the time being, with updates on the affected roads being posted on the official JKR website.
The latest floods affect several areas in Kelantan and Terengganu, including in Machang, Tanah Merah and Kuala Krai in Kelantan that were already battered by earlier floods; there are also continuous rain warnings for areas in Pahang and Johor. There is a sliver of good news in that floods in Kuala Krai are expected to fully subside today, which should aid relief efforts. Stay safe.
