Latest Kings update details Mike Brown head coaching firing was ‘never wanted’ in Sacramento

Apparently, the Sacramento Kings’ head coaching dismissal towards Mike Brown wasn’t desired by most of the people within the organization.

According to Ramona Shelburne of ESPN, the Kings made plenty of effort to save their season from early struggles by inquiring about the trade availability of Zach LaVine, Brandon Ingram, Cam Thomas and Kyle Kuzma. There were ideas of making small moves “just to change things up,” but the franchise ultimately pulled the trigger and cut their ties with Brown.

“Nobody wanted to fire Mike,” one Kings source said. “He’s a good coach. People here really care about him. Until the very last moment we were trying to make it work.”

A disastrous split up

The Kings’ break up with Brown was generally deemed controversial by the majority of the basketball world – causing massive uproar amongst fans and coaches most notably on Michael Malone.

Despite adding an All-Star caliber in DeMar DeRozan this offseason to an already talented core of De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis, the Kings (14-19) have massively struggled throughout the season, and their five-game home losing skid this month served as the last straw for the Kings to call it quits with Brown. Reports suggest that general manager Monte McNair informed Brown of the team’s decision when the head coach was on his way already to the airport in Sacramento’s upcoming road play against the Los Angeles Lakers last weekend.

As such, added by Shelburne, the Kings leadership didn’t consult any of DeRozan, Fox, or Sabonis regarding its plans to sack Brown from his position. Yet, there is a drama surrounding the franchise guard about his tension and perceived role about Brown’s departure — which Fox recently dismissed.

A roller coaster ride in Sacramento

The turn of events in the midst of struggles are simply interesting for the Kings.

In the team’s seven past head coaches since 2013, it was only Brown who gave them their relative success. His arrival in 2022 ushered the entire organization, guiding Sacramento to a 48-win campaign and a first-round postseason trip that erased the league’s longest playoff drought ever at 16 years.

Moments before his departure, Brown himself even aired cryptic words about his embattled situation in the Kings.

With a new bench boss at the helm in Doug Christie, Sacramento can only move forward in hopes of turning their fortunes around this season.
