The above video is going viral on X, showing a man in a Petronas T-shirt (not known if he is an employee) telling viewers to push the Emergency Stop, or E-Stop button if they see any foreign-registered car using RON 95 petrol (which is subsidised for Malaysians only; foreign cars are supposed to use RON 97 petrol).
He says the button can be used by members of the public, and not just staff, for three reasons – fire, fuel overflow in case the nozzle lacks auto-stop, and to prevent foreign-registered vehicles from pumping RON 95 petrol. When you push the button, he says fuel flow will stop at that particular pump.
Subject to expert or official opinion and/or statement on the matter, we’re not so sure it’s a good idea – two years ago another X user told the public to do the same.
We reported then that pressing E-Stop may also stop fuel flow on the other side of the same island and that some stations (different fuel companies may have different failsafes and protocols) may take time to restart fuel flow, causing delays for everyone.
According to the Petroleum Dealers Association of Malaysia (PDAM), the official procedure is to immediately inform petrol station cashiers or forecourt staff if they see foreign vehicles pumping RON 95 petrol. The staff can then remotely stop the pump.
