The term has existed for decades, however, and the concept of “a group of characters forced to fight until only one remains” has been featured in movies for just as long. Television has also gotten in on the trend, with the mega-hit Squid Game adopting the same core idea to become one of Netflix’s biggest Emmy-award winners.
