Stephen Curry points out major flaw in Warriors roster, he recognizes what team is not built to deal with

Stephen Curry doesn’t think the Golden State Warriors are well-equipped to make big comebacks with the roster they have this season.

The Golden State Warriors lost 99-129 to the Sacramento Kings at home in a deflating second leg of a back-to-back. After beating the Memphis Grizzlies without Stephen Curry on Saturday, Curry’s return to the lineup led to an uncompetitive Warriors showing against the Kings.

Curry reacted to the loss harshly. He referred to the loss as embarrassing and admitted that the Warriors aren’t built for major comebacks.

“I don’t know. Nobody likes to get embarrassed like that. Everybody is on a back-to-back, I didn’t play yesterday. The Kings have a very fast-paced offense.

“They had pretty much every option they wanted and offensive rebounds in the first quarter. When you’re looking up and it’s a double-digit lead before the first timeout. 36-21 Like, we’re not built to have a crazy comeback.”

After being pressed on his comment, Curry clarified what he meant. The point guard remarked on the general nature of having to make a massive comeback in a game.

“We haven’t shown that. It’s one of those things where you don’t want to be in those situations. Especially on a back-to-back where the guys used a lot of energy to get the win last night. I’d love to start the game a lot better to give ourselves a chance and not be in a situation where you need crazy offensive fireworks to even have a chance.”

Stephen Curry looks frustrated

Stephen Curry performed well in the blowout loss to the Kings. He had 26 points (8-12 FG) with seven rebounds in a decent showing which wasn’t enough. During his comments about the Warriors’ current state, he pointed out flaws in the team’s execution as well.

“I don’t want to overreact to it, but you have to address the execution. A couple of times in the first quarter, we were just gifting them possessions. It was a mindless first quarter where they established their dominance and we had no answer for it.”

The Warriors fell down by 15 points at the end of the first. Instead of using it as the impetus for a rally, the deficit only grew. Stephen Curry and the Warriors were down 24 points by the end of the first half. The Kings put the game to bed after securing a 30-point lead heading into the fourth.

Stephen Curry should be dissatisfied with the Warriors’ current state. They’re in danger of falling out of the West Playoff race with their 18-17 record. They look destined for a second consecutive Play-In appearance, but the team has never won a Play-In game. They need to be competitive enough for a top-six seed, which might foreshadow a trade.

Massive injury blow to the franchise

Stephen Curry has more reasons to despair with the Warriors’ latest injury. The team’s second-leading scorer Jonathan Kuminga suffered an ankle injury before the Kings game. He’s expected to miss the next three weeks.

The Warriors can’t afford a contributor like Kuminga missing an extended stretch. He’s averaging 16.8 points and 5.0 rebounds this season. While the forward has bounced around the starting lineup and bench this season, he is an undisputed reason behind their success.

The need for a trade to get Stephen Curry a co-star is increasing in Golden State. Even though the franchise has previously failed to land stars like Paul George and Lauri Markkanen, they can’t give up now.

They’re linked to Jimmy Butler at the moment. However, there’s no guarantee the Warriors are willing to commit the assets to land the disgruntled Heat forward. Even though Butler would be a great fit next to Curry, it’s hard to imagine Golden State giving up major assets for him right now.

With Kuminga gone, the Warriors’ need for a Stephen Curry co-star is increasing. Due to the trade deadline coming up in a month, the Warriors will have to pick a direction fast.
